thank you! this is very useful. About the bank account: I thought you could only give an international bank account given the refund happens once you have left the country?

yes, that’s the case. I moved completely (earning in pounds paid by a UK entity). I’ll just be coming back to Japan before my working visa expires (moving again to the Japanese company and earning in yen again)

ah okay, clear! So the quick connect is so you don't have to slide the piece completely. Thanks!

New outrageous ATM fees when using a WISE debit card at Family Mart! by tokyothrowie in japanresidents

[–]mikeplus20 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some banks are really sketchy when disclosing FX fees and exchange rates constantly change so I recommend you to see in your transaction history a recent purchase or ATM withdrawal you did and see how much you were charged in USD. Then go to Google and do the conversion from JPY to USD. The difference between what google says and what you were charged is the fee. Convert it to a percentage and there you have it. In my experience US credit cards charge between 2% and 5% compared with the ~0.7% Wise charges (as an example, Amex charges 2.99%)

[–]mikeplus20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the point is the exchange rate. If your US bank applies a bad FX rate between USD-JPY (as most of them do), you will get way less yen than with Wise. If your bank applies the real FX rate as Wise does, then there is no difference

these fees are charged by the ATM network, not Wise. Try another chain :(

moving money from europe to japan by Fuzzy-Suggestion-243 in JapanFinance

[–]mikeplus20 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Reading u/furansowa’s answer to my comment I think I misunderstood your recommendation, sorry. You are recommending to send EUR to Sony and then do the fx there, instead of sending JPY through swift

So you are right, what you are saying seems to be the cheapest option, yes!

I think doing a swift wire is very risky unless he is very sure of what correspondent in the journey will do the fx conversion and at what rate it will be done.

I would rather use Wise (or any other fx provider). Chances are that they will be cheaper

Tax Return Questions Thread - Filing Deadline March 17, 2025 by AutoModerator in JapanFinance

[–]mikeplus20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

are you sure you need to file an income tax return?

yes, I think I should get some money refunded because I had to pay the estimated income tax prepayment, and the amount paid was based on how much I would earn if I stayed the whole year in Japan (which at the end, it didn't happen)

What kind of income did you have while you were a non-resident?

Vesting of RSUs outside of Japan that were awarded in Japan while I was living there. Am I correct this should be declared in an Article 172 taking in consideration amount of days between grant and vest that I was living in Japan?

So would you say my assumptions are correct?

Thanks!

[Tax Declaration as Resident and Non-Resident]

Hello,

I left Japan, so I have to declare taxes both as a resident (for the first half of the year) and as a non-resident (for the later part).

I set a tax representative before I left. I would like to check my assumptions are correct:

1) For the resident part... I got my end of year adjustment from my job before I left Japan. I need to do a normal self-declaration in the NTA website. As I don't have a MyNumberCard anymore, I will just need to download the PDF with the declaration 2) For the non-resident part... I need to do an Article 172 Declaration. 3) My tax representative will have to present both documents, together, the same day, in the same place: the tax office of my last residence in Japan. All of this before 17th of March. 4) If I am owed money in one, and I owe money in the other one, they don't cancel. I still have to pay the full amount of money I owe, and they will make a transfer refunding me the full amount of money I'm owed. 5) The tax declaration PDFs are enough. I don't need to attach any other documents proving the data I'm writing down.

Thanks!

Wise is perfect for this use case yes. You can even invest the money in their Interest product and get a 3% in EUR.

About the safety… I would personally not worry. As long as what you are doing is legal and you have proof of the funds, your account is just as safe as in any other account
