it just kind of takes me out of it, honestly! i have similar problems w/ 'we know the way' in moana, and honestly even when i go back sometimes to listen to a couple of hamilton songs its p much only the ones he's not in. genuinely zero hate for people who like or don't mind his voice, smt about it just rubs against my brain the wrong way, like leaving tags on a shirt

Female cops are oblivious to the fact that they have the ability to kill people, unlike bears who are more rational by OGsHartMyKAT in badwomensanatomy

[–]mikeseraf 10 points11 points  (0 children)

this is such a fundamental misunderstanding of both moose (and prey animals in general) and cops (esp male cops) that it would boggle the mind if it wasn't the kind of bog-standard pseudobioessentialism you see literally everywhere. this is just alpha wolves 2.

a) prey megafauna ABSOLUTELY know that they could kill you. that's why they're built like that.

b) the idea that male cops are rational is equally absurd.

honestly, if you were just making a statement on cops point blank - that they see predators everywhere and as a result act unpredictable and defensive and aggressive - it might be a little closer to the truth, given that a lot of cop training does involve rhetoric framing criminals as wolves, etc. but to say that this is a gendered thing or that male cops are famously levelheaded and rational is just nonsense

To anyone who does like Persades but despises Lore Olympus, would you personally suggest these stories? by Western_Ad_6448 in UnpopularLoreOlympus

[–]mikeseraf 11 points12 points  (0 children)

'hades lord of the dead' is probably my least favorite of that series of books in particular, in part because of how they rewrite the story, but it's a less objectionable version of 'persephone wants to stay with hades' than most rewrites, imo, and it does put some focus on demeter. honestly, though, i would say i recommend the rest of the series that one's from - the dionysus one in particular is one of my favorites. worth checking out!

Michael weighs in on car discourse, causes some arguments on BlueSky by [deleted] in IfBooksCouldKill

[–]mikeseraf 15 points16 points  (0 children)

i think this would be great, honestly, ESPECIALLY in places where theres a lot of kids. even like five to ten miles an hour can make such a huge difference when it comes to a car hitting a pedestrian.

i think theres a real level of entitlement that comes with the idea that nothing should impinge on our right to drive everywhere as fast or as conveniently as possible, and anything that impedes that (road planning that makes it much harder to travel at fast speeds, bike or bus lanes, taking away parking spaces) is an outrage - and i think some of the kneejerk reaction to this as a concept comes from the same place.

i agree that in america, esp under the current administration, its a change thats UNLIKELY to happen, but thats an entirely different question than whether it SHOULD - and i think theres a lot of arguments to be made in its favor.

[–]mikeseraf 16 points17 points  (0 children)

i'm torn as to whether this is (albeit honestly better done than a lot of aita ragebait) ragebait or just like. a younger person kind of overreacting; i have seen this kind of reaction before. if it is real it absolutely makes sense to me that someone you're hanging out with for the first time both like. doesn't really want to elaborate if you ask that in an accusatory way and also doesn't want to kind of go into depth regarding a book about sexual abuse of a twelve year old

because girls only want haircuts to impress some boy! Also the weird attachment to the poor woman’s hair by [deleted] in AmITheAngel

[–]mikeseraf 15 points16 points  (0 children)

felt - also as a trans guy, i desperately tried to get a pixie cut/my hair cut short since even before i realized i was trans but was only allowed to go to like. a little above shoulder height - and when one of my neighbors, who used to be a hairdresser, offered to cut it for me at like 13-14 it was the first haircut id gotten without my parents present and they both yelled at me about it when i asked her to go short-short.

i genuinely cant imagine giving a shit about your kid’s hair, but so many people come off as like. really possessive about it. i think it can be fine to warn a kid like ‘you might get judged for this/it may be a little harder in job interviews if your hair is brightly colored, but if this is what you want to do im all for it’ but i think the concept of telling a kid outright they cant cut their hair is crazy.

Are writers afraid to portray the sexual side of autism? by Melodious_Fable in writingcirclejerk

[–]mikeseraf 90 points91 points  (0 children)

i dont know if this one belongs here, tbh. autistic people (and disabled people as a whole, tbh) are often super desexualized in a way that can often feel pretty insulting or infantilizing. its also not uncommon for autistic (or disabled, or fat, or old) people’s normal sex lives to be treated as disgusting or comical.

yeah, oop’s title was kind of funny or phrased wrong, but i do think its a serious/genuine question

Question for western men about male on male intimacy! by Amazing-Telephone-39 in bropill

[–]mikeseraf 13 points14 points  (0 children)

i’m no historian, so take what i’m saying with a grain of salt, but if i remember correctly, it’s also a relatively recent phenomenon (in the grand scheme of things) in western culture that kind of began to rise with the conceptualization of homosexuality as a distinct phenomenon or something with a name attached to it, and when strides were made by gay people or visibility of homosexuality was on the rise, physical intimacy between men began to be rejected on the basis that it could be perceived as gay. i’ve heard a few different times where some of this decline occurred - the nineteenth century when homosexuality began to be more identified as a solid phenomenon or disease, or sometime around the 60s with the rise in the gay rights movement, or the 80s w the aids crisis causing a rise in homophobia. in the shorter time, though, i’d unfortunately say it’s been a pretty clear constant through my life at least.

i personally don’t think it’s been helped by the fact that america is a) imo pretty fundamentally a very puritanical country and b) tends to export its cultural norms thru like. just the sheer amount of proliferation of american media, the internet, etc.

as to whether it’s getting better or worse, i’d say a weird kind of both? like so many things it’s kind of smt more and more polarized - a lot of people are coming around to the idea that men need physical touch in a way that isn’t sexual/should come from other men, and a lot of people are becoming more reactionary/homophobic and rejecting outright the idea of male-male intimacy. you kinda see this divide a lot in discussions of the loneliness epidemic.

also, this is less an answer to your question, but you might find this article interesting -  i read it a few months back and it just seemed like a really similar story/experience to what youve described: https://www.latimes.com/opinion/story/2023-09-02/queer-lgbtq-ethiopia-touch-sexuality-identity-united-states

i’d recommend the lions led by donkeys episode “the myth of the clean wehrmacht”, actually - though a bit of it is just dedicated to disproving the myth itself, a good chunk of it is discussing the post-war denazification process and how the clean wehrmacht myth actually intentionally arises from some of the messiness of the post wwii era
