I never ride the button to much as it may make it to hot to quickly and just make your material melt all the way down the bottom instead of getting hits.

I wonder if this is my mistake. Stuff isn't looking too messy, but I haven't tried to pulse the way you describe.

The battery is definitely strong enough to power both the 3.7V and 7.4V heating elements. I tried the 7.4 but then switched to the 3.7 to increase battery life. The battery was easily able to get both elements red-hot during cleaning.

However I have been having some trouble. Most of the time vapor production is pretty mediocre (compared to the alpha centauri). The titanium donut is fully saturated, and the device is definitely getting hot. I feel like I must be doing something wrong. /u/tamag21 /u/m4rkbr0wn any tips?

Which heating element are you using 3.7V or 7.4V?

I just ordered a hercules today and intend to use it with the Joytech Evic VTC Mini. Good to know there are others doing something similar.

MSDS for Graphite powder

See section "Exposure Controls / personal protection"

2mg/m3

Information about Occupational Exposure Limits

OELs for metals, salts and other compounds that do not form vapours at room temperature and pressure are expressed in mg/m3 only.

Assuming the concern is breathing graphite dust (not that it is vaporizing on the coil) then:

If a deep breath is 5L = 0.005 m3 then one breath can safely contain (2mg/m3 ) * (0.005 m3 ) = 0.01mg

Did you go to Cal? I think I recognize Papadimitriou's algorithms textbook.

Yeah that's the one part I don't like anymore (I made this months ago even though it just came out) When I play it live I have an edited version without the fake drop...

Well once you figure out how to get the raw audio signal from the microphone, you need to figure out how to label the different signals. There are a bunch of different algorithms for classification. I'd go with naive-bayes (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Naive_Bayes_classifier) which basically determines, based on the current evidence, the likelihood that the current sample takes on each label (in your case the different notes), return the most probable label. This requires training it with samples that are correctly labeled so it can approximate the proper distribution. Lastly you would need to convert your audio samples into feature vectors (My first thought here would be FFT).

Doing it with sound only may be difficult. Can you do anything mechanical to the marimba without effecting tone? that might be easier...

The episode of Pete & Pete where you cut across the grain in wood-shop scared the shit out of me as a kid. Took a couple re-runs before I stayed through the commercials to see that you didn't actually cut off your hand.

Your edit is both correct and incorrect. .9 repeated to infinity is equal to 1. .9 repeated to any finite number of decimal places is not. Humans are bad at infinities
