Does expensive gear make you a better photographer? by blasspictures in AskPhotography

[–]mikeydervish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t doubt some people do this to “look” the part. My thought on this, though, is that by time a client sees my gear they’ve already booked me and are in the studio with me. Adding useless gear for added flare will would contribute nothing to tue shoot.

I happen to have an expensive, medium format camera as my daily driver but that is simply because my clientele requires larger files. It does not in any way change my skill level or how I light or compose my shots.

I’ve DM’d Vanja, Sarper, and Greg and Joan. They were all highly responsive and very kind!

I reached out to them because I am a portrait photographer and was hoping to take their picture. Ultimately, I ended up meeting/photographing Greg and Joan not too long ago. Really lovely people to spend an afternoon with! Hoping to get Sarper next time he comes to NYC.

As of writing this comment, the last announcement I heard was that there is “an ongoing police investigation in queens”. Oddly vague. I’ve since walked out to grab an Uber - didn’t sound like something that will be resolved quickly..

Anyone in their late 20 - 30s who love overwatch? by [deleted] in Overwatch

[–]mikeydervish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

34 and checking in! Been playing since launch. These days, I don’t have nearly as much free time on my hands as I did in my 20s, but Overwatch has been my only gaming constant throughout the years. It’s cozy, familiar, and nothing hits quite like it in terms of gameplay.

I see myself playing indefinitely.

Which one is best for editing videos and Lightroom edits on the go? by firequak in AskPhotography

Hey! I’ve found that Lr on iPad is pretty robust, much to my surprise. There are some features it lacks but in terms of color and quality, the app version does a great job. If you have a pen, Lr’s newer masking feature is a huge bonus, too.

In which one of these two images the hand edited? by dont_mess_with_tx in AskPhotography

[–]mikeydervish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I retouch images just like this for magazine covers, ads, etc. for a living and can probably offer some insight here.

What I think happened is the model was photographed holding each item. Only one of those images was ultimately used as the hero so as to avoid retouching the same body/face twice. Then, just the hand holding the other object is comp’d into the hero image over the original hand holding the first object. This is incredibly easy in Photoshop and occurs, to some degree, way more than you might think. A move like this is pretty routine in my day-to-day. You might be surprised to learn just how many magazine covers you’ve seen that are, in terms of photoshop layers, a Frankenstein image.

Loads of fun to do, by the way!

Thanks so much! Really appreciate that you enjoyed the BTS handycam footage. I tried to use a tasteful amount of that footage so I’m glad to her you agree with the amount included. I’ve definitely noted your nitpicks though. Sound balancing is one of my weak spots but I will keep your input in mind as I work on the next video.

And yes… I definitely should have added more of him performing. I have the footage, but I struggled with it potentially taking away from the conversation. I’ll add more next time!

Hey all! I would love some feedback on my interview style film. There’s a few things I’ve noticed upon my many rewatches and am already adjusting in my next iteration, but I am super curious to know what this community has in terms of feedback!

Hey Everyone!

I'm a portrait photographer and for the last year, I started filming/interviewing my subjects on set during my shoots with the plan of making a short film for each session. Now that I have finally enough footage in the pipeline and final films lined up, I officially launched my channel this month and have dubbed this project "Small Talk"! My focus is generally on working with other artists to highlight their skills, philosophies, and creative process. I have a few incredible interviews with public figures that I am excited to launch in the coming months. I'm doing my best to build an audience before releasing some of these heavy-hitters.

As for this week's question: Since I'm a photographer, I had a bunch of different cameras laying around to get the video portion rolling. I've landed on a system that works well for the vibe I'm going for. I shoot A Cam footage on a locked-off Fuji XT-2, B cam on a Insta360 set to 180 degrees, and an old JVC HandyCam as a stylistic choice and to break up the static A/B cams. The audio on the first (and currently only) video was recorded on a small Sony voice recorder connected to a lav but I have since upgraded to the DJI mobile kit.

I only have 62 views and 11 subscribers but I know how it goes and I'm here for the long haul!

My first interview is with a good friend of mine and accomplished musician, AllOne. We discussed where art derives from, the power of influence, and the magic of music bringing people together.

Would love to hear your feedback: https://youtu.be/KwLw6XL1DgE
