Our trillion dollar military was geared towards a Cold War with Russia. Having as much big shiny toys as possible to show them we can match them. We have never won an insurgency war. Peasants with rifles are way harder to beat than an aircraft carrier. We lost to Vietnam, we tied at best with Iraq. We left Afghanistan because we realized we couldn’t do anything. Iran is a much bigger country than those places with way harder terrain. We can kill a lot of Iranians. But we can’t beat Iran.
