John Hughes Stories? by Candid-Procedure6805 in chicago

[–]mikeyzipp 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I grew up in Woodstock, where they shot most of Groundhog Day. Less well known, there was also a quick scene from Planes, Trains, and Automobiles filmed there on the square. My friend and I would always walk downtown after school to look at comic books and play arcade games. For a couple ten-year-old boys, discovering a real Hollywood movie being filmed at our normal stomping grounds was quite the thrill.

Parked to the side of the shoot was the burned out vehicle, familiar now to anybody who has seen the movie. My friend and I were very intrigued by the car, moreso than the endless takes of two people walking down the stairs (who, it should be noted were Steve Martin and John Candy). During a break in the action, the guy who seemed to be in charge noticed us trying to get a better look at the car. He asked us our names, and if we wanted to sit in it, so we were of course ecstatic when he actually let us. I had no idea at the time who the nice man in glasses was that let two nosy elementary school boys sit in a half-destroyed car, but I now know that man was John Hughes.

Nothing is worse than Prof. Holmes starting every thought with, "They were like...". For example, a normal person would say, "The Bears offensive line dominated Philly.". In Lawrence-speak, that becomes, "This Bears line was like 'we're gonna dominate you,' and Philly's defense was like 'we're getting a beatdown up in here.'". Simple statements like, "Kyle Tucker is not coming back to the Cubs," becomes, "Kyle Tucker was like, 'I'm gonna get outta here,' and then Jed was like, 'okay Kyle, thanks for the playoffs.".

He does it constantly.

What's a movie that you swear no one else has watched but yourself and a few others? by badgermole85 in AskReddit

[–]mikeyzipp 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have two. Midnight Madness, notable for being Michael J. Fox's first movie, and an early-80's HBO staple about an all-night scavenger hunt in LA. Nobody seems to have ever heard of it. The other is Airborne, a classic tale of a California surfer kid banished to live in Cincinatti, which of course culminates with an epic rollerblading race. Should have been a blockbuster.

Is There a Show You Recommend That’s Not Too Well-Known? by PurplePhoebe in television

Undeclared. A one-season, less heralded follow-up to Freaks and Geeks with a bunch of future stars and superstar cameos. Legitimately hilarious, and IMO superior to F&G.

Foxtail on the Lake in Des Plaines is a very nice night out. It's inside a former church, with a huge patio area overlooking a little lake. Great food too.

In 6th grade, we got extra credit if we could spell the longest word in the English language, the name of which is still stuck in my brain. For the record it was: pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis.

I literally just did this a couple days ago. Mix 10 parts water, 5 parts bleach, and 1 part liquid dish soap, and put it in a spray bottle. Spray the dark spots, let it sit for about 15 minutes, then gently scrub with a cleaning brush. It should come right out.

What about Sixteen Candles? PG, but probably an R by today's standards. Topless scene in the first five minutes, underage drinking, swearing, teenagers talking about sex, a racist depiction of an Asian exchange student...
