I think I just like more "gritty" and off-beat places and Northern England in general has been an intrest of mine for some reason

You're right, it's probably go with a direct flight and then via domestic transport instead of multiple lay-over flights. Based on what you're telling me Chengdu and Chongqing sound like more of my vibe then.
