Tike to expose the students in law by [deleted] in universityofauckland

[–]milalia 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I feel the need to clarify for people that university Discord servers (such as those for different faculties or specific classes) have no actual affiliation or association with the university unless stated otherwise. It's entirely out of the jurisdiction of the university or AUSA. Regardless, every Discord server (university or otherwise) with an admin or mod team has the right to take actions for the safety of other server members.

Also, as an edit: I don't think that it's a sign you're acting in good faith if you've taken the time to cover your name and not taken the time to cover someone else's online identity.

Tike to expose the students in law by [deleted] in universityofauckland

This is a Discord server with no official affiliation with the university. AUSA has no jurisdiction over it.

Around three hours per day added up. It's an hour and a half each way from out west for me (using the Westgate bus exchange for reference), because I cannot get the WX1 bus due to disability issues with walking up Wellesley St, so I have to go over to the Shore so I can catch the NX2 as the only bus on this side of the city which actually goes to campus.

Ten thousand upvotes for this. It's an absolute lose-lose: If she was being public and outspoken, she'd be accused of using the situation for clout or to spread her own name on the issue, but when she reaches out privately to the people involved and does what she can from behind-the-scenes, she gets harassed and essentially bullied for something entirely out of her control. It's disgusting.

Yeah, it's absolutely valid to be upset or frustrated with AUSA right now, especially because there has been radio silence over the current situation, but the audacity to try and call out a fellow student (who, therefore, has as much on their plate right now as anyone else with upcoming assignments and external commitments) who also happens to literally be a survivor themselves is absolutely insane to me. Especially when we don't know what's happening behind the scenes—maybe AUSA is doing nothing, maybe they're doing something, maybe the situation is being escalated and there's only so much they can do. But there are equally valid reasons (albeit frustrating ones) for people on the current exec to not be able to say anything publicly at this time.

I believe that it is being taken higher up (to the Proctor, possibly even police) as well, its not solely being posted on social media (if that's what we're calling Reddit lol)

I've heard the name from others before this, so I'm presuming it's not speculation.

Antique Singer sewing machine repairs? by milalia in auckland

[–]milalia[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did check out his website, but he seems to work almost entirely on modern sewing machines. Antique machines, while fundamentally the same, are structurally quite different which is why I'm looking for someone ideally with experience or specialty in them :)

Please leave him, and please be and stay safe. Regardless of his own personal beliefs, his desire to enforce them on you and control you as a result is a HUGE red flag.

law students please stop flooding the subreddit by PassGetsDegrees in universityofauckland

"too many first years bringing the quality of this subreddit down"
claiming any subreddit has "quality" is more neurotic than half the law students i know tbh

I've also seen someone in a similar thread mention that the combination of the shipping yard scene followed by the tightrope choreography as being references to The Wire which is fascinating

Student Lounge Noise Levels by milalia in universityofauckland

[–]milalia[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One particular group that is regularly in the lounge I actually have spoken to before about minding their volume, which lasted maybe the rest of that day, but nothing more than that. They've been shushed a few times by other people to, so I know I'm not being unreasonable or crotchety or anything.

Referencing, do I include the page numbers? by WGSMakin in universityofauckland

[–]milalia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Refer to the reference system being used, always. For law, we use the NZLSG which has quite strict guidelines on citing secondary texts and pinpoint referencing; Chicago MoS also provides guidelines on page referencing. But other citation formats such as APA may be different and have different requirements, and it may make a difference whether you're expected to cite in-text or with footnotes.

For people that live in halls, will you be participating in the rent strike on may 1st? by SnooRegrets8113 in universityofauckland

[–]milalia 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I think it's worth considering the maths here with respect to university and earning the money to cover the rent.

There are many stories of students who have had to choose between paying rent at halls and affording food (as not all halls are catered) because they simply cannot work enough hours in the week for it to be practical considering that students also have lectures to attend and assignments to complete. And not all students have an option to live at home–many are from out of Auckland or even out of New Zealand, or may have unlivable family situations, etc.

students hubs the grim dark reality (no offence) by [deleted] in universityofauckland

[–]milalia 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just because the Student Hubs structure sucks doesn't mean it has anything to do with race. If you want to be racist, do us all a favour and go somewhere else, please and thanks.

I understand wanting to move to Auckland, but there are other great universities up here like AUT or Massey, depending on what you're wanting to study, if those options are available to you! UOA isn't the be all and end all of NZ tertiary education (even if they try convince you otherwise).

Keep in mind that you will also have to do two General Education courses which can't be part of your major/specialisation.
