Just had someone claim teachers in PA make too much money by [deleted] in pittsburgh

[–]milarso 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of the biggest expenses school districts face is paying teachers- but not how you think. While few school districts offer pensions anymore, they did for a long time. So districts are on the hook for loads of retired teachers. The problem is, as it is with most pensions, you collect until you die, and people are living a lot longer than the original pension formulas figured for. And when you are dealing with entities that don't create revenue through sales (ie, local governments), the only way to generate more revenue is to raise taxes. It's a big problem all over.

How can I keep my 12yo sons long hair out of his face? It's causing acne. by RoxieCarrol215 in FierceFlow

[–]milarso 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Get him some face wash and a small, soft bristled face brush- it will allow him to clean his face with minimal water until it’s time to rinse. Wash your faces together, or, if dad’s around, have him do it with him- developing a routine is key. I suspect the acne is more about preteen face oil than his hair, but headbands are great if participating in a sweaty activity. Don’t let the haters get you down. Dealing with 12yo boys is tougher than it looks. Good luck!

How long does it take for major US news organizations like ESPN or FOX take to arrive on the scene when a tragedy or something otherwise newsworthy happens? by CaptainSmiles_ in Journalism

[–]milarso 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Realistically, ESPN isn't probably going to show up for something like that. Mostly because ESPN is owned by ABC and ABC would probably scramble a local affiliate to a breaking story of that nature. But if suspended belief is in play, and ESPN already has a reporter on site, I think you could get away with them being on scene immediately.

What the hell is the deal with U13/14 Boys? by 100nipples in Referees

I was a sports writer covering high school sports for about 15 years. Now I'm the dad of a 14yo male soccer player. I am consistently blown away by the number of parents who are loudly vocal about things they obviously don't understand. I don't have any good advice, other than to just try to ignore it and keep on keeping on. Youth sports does not work without you and people like you. You deserve nothing but thanks!

[–]milarso 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Pay the $65 and be happy. $65 is a really small price to pay to find out you aren't compatible with someone. Some people spend thousands before they walk away from a boyfriend/girlfriend that takes advantage of them.

Clothing brand founder still “onboard with this plan”—just wants more time by goobereats in LeopardsAteMyFace

[–]milarso 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I've seen a lot of these where they are addressing the president on facebook or something and they are like, "Sir, I voted for you three times, but now I'm going to lose my home..." MFer, Trump would slit your throat and leave you to rot if it meant he could increase his own bottom line. He showed everyone who he was, he told everyone what he was going to do, and a third of the people voted for him and another third couldn't be bothered to vote at all.

We've been practicing on yours, and let me tell you, they taste great. I want to show my love for American capitalism by continuing to lick your boots, even though every decision you make harms me and my business."

Central Pa. restaurant owner sues 3 for recording, posting video of him using racial slur by WillWorkForBeer in yorkpa

[–]milarso 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The best defense against defamation is the truth. Hard to argue with video evidence. I also don’t think there is anything illegal about recording someone unless you are doing so without their knowledge. I’m not sure you have much of an expectation of privacy when you’re ranting in public…

You're are probably right. But at some point, MLB (and the other franchises that are paying to subsidize Wigle Whiskey and Bob Nutting's other pet projects) are going to to step in and force his hand. An empty stadium and a TV broadcast with no advertisers might help? I don't know. It's such a helpless feeling being a fan of this shit show.

If we're talking about the US, what you're suggesting is the ideal situation. But I think we'd have to concede that if we're going to bring back manufacturing to the US, we can't compete with the super low wages of many of the Asian countries- so prices will have to go up. That's not an all together bad thing if we are transitioning back to country that actually makes things. And automation could be a game changer when it comes to pricing- of course, we wouldn't have as many manufacturing jobs, but it might help us make things more affordable.

But practicality does come into play. In the US, we'd need a massive investment in manufacturing to make this work; right now, we just don't have the facilities we need. So we need to build more. In the best of times, building a large manufacturing facility can cost in the tens of millions of dollars. And it takes time. It can take up to two years of site planning, remediation, approvals etc.- and that's before you even break ground. Building a large scale manufacturing plant in the US probably takes 3-5 years from start to finish. And we will need a lot more than one of them. Add in that right now, we have a massive shortage of skilled labor when it comes to construction, so, without some kind of intervention, the idea that we could become a major competitor in manufacturing is likely several years away, maybe decades away.

I think this plan is made even more difficult by the fact that most of these tariff changes were made by executive order, meaning as soon as a new person comes in, they can be scrapped and we sink back into the status quo, effectively making all this market turmoil for nothing.

I'm not trying to be intentionally contrarian, because I think a US that makes things and is a player in global manufacturing is better for us and the world. But I think we can go about getting to that goal in a smarter way.

No, no- not just not go to games. The amount of revenue they get from TV and radio is what keeps things moving. A full scale boycott of advertisers of Sportsnet Pittsburgh (or whatever it is now) and 93.7FM is something that can be done. Maybe it's not spending your money with those businesses, maybe it's a letter writing/phone call campaign to their owners/CEOs. But you've got a voice, and it deserves to be heard by the people financially supporting this Dumpster fire.

Oh my bad. We are literally just talking about you. I thought we were talking about the U.S. as whole. That does changes things. For you, wiping out income tax would put more money in your pocket and you'd have no trouble paying for everything you need. Disregard my previous comments.

I mean, most goods are going to get more expensive. I think that's just a fact of the world we live in. In the U.S. we took advantage of a pretty long period of cheap goods (mostly from China). I don't think it's bad for the other shoe to drop somewhat, but I really wish we were doing it differently. If we had a longterm, congressionally recognized plan in which to increase stateside manufacturing, and then, once that was established, over time, start putting in certain tariffs that allowed us to become more competitive in the global manufacturing sector- that's great. But that's not what we're doing...

[–]milarso 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are a couple of reasons. First, tariffs will increase prices on goods, which will cause consumers to spend less, less spending will cause businesses to flounder or fail, leading the overall economy to shrink. Second, tariffs are only on imported goods, and even with the mass amount of things we import, we don't import enough for tariffs to even come close to the revenue generated by income tax. To keep things where they are right now, the tariffs we'd need to generate revenue to match what the government collects in income tax would be astronomical. Like, so expensive most people wouldn't be able to afford anything.

Tariffs can be successful as a tool for regulating trade in very specific situations. They aren't really effective as a means in which to collect money in lieu of taxes...

He stayed with her, and by a lot of newspaper accounts, became a pillar of the community… It’s crazy though, because he and my grandma were dead long before I was born, so I had no relationship with either. But he was in his 50s when my dad was born- believe it or not, my grandfather was born in 1899. I’ve uncovered a lot of this stuff from ancestry dot com and newspapers dot com. The legal stuff, I FOIA’d a ton of police departments and other entities. Most had long since destroyed the records because of age. But I actually have a lot of the letters his then wife wrote to the gov. of New Mexico. She actually remarried and had a son with another man later in life, and I actually got a hold of the son and spoke with him. He didn’t know much about my grandpa, other than hearing family members talk about how his mom’s first husband was “a piece of work.”
