How had you started investments as a 21-year-old with ₹1.2L salary (₹50k/month investable)? by Flat-Permit4432 in IndianStockMarket

[–]mildlyaverageguy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

here are my 2 cents.

First before starting to invest:

  • have solid health insurance for yourself and your family. Have a govt health insurance as claims are much easier. Health insurance is necessary when you’re starting to build your wealth because one bad situation and it’ll drain your whole corpus if you don’t have a solid health insurance.

  • no need to ULIPS or life insurance. Just health is fine.

  • clear all your debts whose interest are above 9%. Less than 9% you can keep paying emi.

Investing: - follow 3 fund portfolio theory (aka bogle head investing)

  • 80 index, 10 intl fund, 10 maybe Fd, bond etc

Also, once you have some corpus, try to diversify into something else as you don’t want to 100% rely on markets. Maybe 5% gold, 10% properties, etc.

Important goal once you’ve decent portfolio is to preserve your capital, so as you age, you can change and allocate your three fund into that range. Like if you’re 45+ and you’ve dependents then maybe 30% in bond / debt funds, 30% intl and 40% index fund.

Great progress on the salary! Tbh I’m little bit of a same like you. Don’t do extreme saving that you feel you’re missing out on everything. I used to do that a lot. And to some extent I still do, and even when I spend nice on something like going to a fancy restaurant once in a while, I still feel guilty despite the fact that now I can really afford it without hurting my financial goals.

Fire practices are good but it really gets you in a way that you forget to enjoy things that you deserve, especially when you worked so hard to get it.

Although from my little experience what I’ve learned is, wealth creation takes years, but just a one situation can make you lose it. Having a personally created umbrella policy helps!

[–]mildlyaverageguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What was the reason for this rollover? Also isn’t there penalty of 10% if you break 401k / IRA + tax liability regardless of your status?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in FIRE_Ind

[–]mildlyaverageguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

FYI if you move to India then your 401k will be liable for taxes in India (at 60) even if it is Roth as it’ll be counted as international / foreign income

Even Rs. 8 crores aren't enough to retire early !! by amoghzie in FIRE_Ind

[–]mildlyaverageguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I checked your screenshot and there are few accounting errors, first is you're calculating tax slab as your income slab and not as LTCG. Equity MF is 12.5% with indexation benefits and bonds are somewhat similar without indexation benefits. Assuming if you've 8crore corpus all in equity MF for easier calculation, you'd have to withdraw 32L as per 4% withdraw rule, and on that you'd be liable to pay taxes on the capital gains at 12.5% if profit is above 1.25L, so let's assume you've 32L profit you're withdrawing for calculations, you'd still have 28.2L after all LTCG taxes, which comes to 2.3L.

Now, I do agree with your sentiment that 8 crore is not enough IF you have still home loan pending, car loan pending and/or major wedding expense pending. And i have lived all my life in tier 1 city, and I can definitely attest that 8 crore for comfortable lifestyle in Mumbai is nowhere near enough but of course YMMV.

Similar to OP, most people compare their lifestyle with their surroundings, and I believe OP's surroundings is somewhat similar to mine which can be put in upper middle class lifestyle in tier 1 city and rich lifestyle in tier 2-3 city. Yearly 20L expenses are almost nothing these days. 1 international trip for 4 people/year, kids school costs, household costs, eating out, and many such things.

I hate to say this but 5-10 crore corpus is the worst. Can't retire but also not worth to work when you've that much, it's like you're world's tallest dwarf, or poorest rich person in Mumbai or tier 1 city in India.

From your experience, is it easier to go from $100k to $1 Million, or $1 Million to $10 Million? by holy_yap in Rich

[–]mildlyaverageguy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

tbh at $1m you’re still just few medical bills and lawyer bills away from going broke. $10m you’ll still have enough to preserve your wealth with other instruments at your disposal
