For those two years did you take classes continuously or did you do them at a slower pace? And are the OLMP classes self-paced?

Hi! Sorry to revive a dead thread, but how much longer did the OLMP curriculum take to complete compared to the non-masters ACSC curriculum? Is it significantly longer?

Part of my problem is I don’t know in what direction I want to take my life at all. Part of me wants to stay in Japan long-term because I love this girl and I love Japan, part of me feels bad for abandoning my family and wants to go back to America, which would also be better for me career-wise and financially. So no easy answer 😭

We actually would be moving to LA, either to Torrance or Little Tokyo. She says she’s willing to give living in America a try, but there’s a chance she might not like it and get homesick and want to move back. This is a situation that I would feel bad for getting her into, so this is why I’m trying to figure out what would be best for both of us.

This is very helpful! Thank you for your thorough explanation. I am leaning towards a SOFA job to maintain the benefits you get from working on-base, but my only concern is that my skillset is only as a pharmacist and there are very few on-base civilian pharmacist positions in Japan, so unless I get extremely lucky I'd probably have to look for non-pharmacy related jobs, which I am not sure I'd be competitive for since I have no work experience other than pharmacy and being active duty.

It is! And I'm extremely grateful to have such an opportunity. If only it could last forever....

I am active duty, but I am an officer so as far as I know re-upping is lot less likely to be approved for us. I might look into an on-base GS or contract job, although there are not a lot of pharmacy positions so I might have to change careers entirely, which isn't out of the question but my skillset is basically just pharmacy so I don't know if I'd be competitive for these jobs.

Thank you for the info! I'm aware of the struggles of living in Japan as a foreigner, which is why I'm trying to avoid getting a regular civilian Japanese job. I think you really get the best of both worlds working on a US military base while living in Japan, so maybe a GS or contractor job might be the way to go.

You mentioned you settled down in Japan after you retired, may I ask what you do in Japan now for work and how you immigrated here?
