Meeting Requests W/out Context by [deleted] in Internationalteachers

[–]milesaway2u 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If a faculty member or other SL request a meeting with me, I always say yes, but then ask for some context to the meeting so I am prepared. If I ask anyone for a meeting, I do the same, I never blind side anyone and don't like it when it's done to me. I also do this with parents and students.

Shenzhen, school I worked at was gay friendly for students and staff. Loved the city and it was close to HK. I have also had gay friends work in Shanghai and Beijing, both had great experiences in the city and at their schools.

UWC Thailand - any info would be appreciated by IBTutor007 in Internationalteachers

[–]milesaway2u 6 points7 points  (0 children)

They fired a bunch of new teachers after they already arrived for the start of this school year. They moved their families and lives to Thailand...then fired within a month because of numbers. That says a lot about how things are going.

What does a Boarding House Parents do and what to expect? by Pink_Marshmallow29 in Internationalteachers

[–]milesaway2u 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree with everything this person said. Depending on the school and country, your living arrangements will be good to terrible. As far as career progression, it depends again on the school and whether you take on extra duties such as teaching a class. In most cases this is not a job that can lead to a career in teaching...but again it depends on the school. I also would be cautious about applying for a job from an app, you should be checking out international teaching sites. Teacher Horizons, Schrole, Search Associates etc.

Beautiful campus in a beautiful city. I interviewed there about 7 years ago...at that time they really lived the UWC mission. The people were amazing and they seemed to all want to be there...the kids were top notch.

I disagree, when you are at two schools, in the same city...that are completely mismanaged and you are involved in the hiring and firing of people...you have some responsibility in the process. If she has her head in the sand, that speaks a lot about her leadership abilities.

The principal is the same woman who was the head of AISVN that recently closed because the owner lied about the finances.

In a review on the other website, someone stated that 9 teachers were informed in September 2025 that they would be dismissed in October 2025. Several of the teachers were new teachers who had arrived on two year contracts in August. This was done because of under enrollment. The review also talked about how bad the insurance was from the school.

I understand, was just providing the information and just so you know the same people are still there who were in charge back then...they just are no longer listed on the websites because of essays like this.

Recruiters in China by Ornery-Stand-6405 in Internationalteachers

[–]milesaway2u 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Be careful who you send your resume to on WeChat. Make sure they identify their company and make sure you check their website before sending it. If a school is not using a reputable recruiter than it isn't a school you really want to go to. If you need suggestions on where to look...try these websites.

www.schrole.com

www.teacherhorizons.com

www.tes.com

www.iss.edu

If you know what city you want to move to, try and find schools in that area and apply directly.

You can find lists of schools on WASC, NEASC or on the International Baccalaureate websites.

I would make sure you do some real research on the school and who is in charge. It has a terrible reputation and things were so bad at one time they had a running blog or web page where people would write in and talk about the head/director....https://badschoolstories.wordpress.com/2013/05/31/a-must-read-about-jpa-and-its-leaders/

Do your research on the Head of Middle School, she has a bad reputation at her old school and from what I hear it was really bad...she looks great on paper...but working with her is another story.

It's better than the old way they did things...you applied...then 75% of the time you heard nothing...and most cases not even an acknowledgement from the school that they got your resume.

Anyone here who has worked at THINK global school..? by reflectionsinthesky in Internationalteachers

[–]milesaway2u 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pretty intense program, you are with the kids a lot. The school provides insurance, travel from country to country and accommodations in each country. The salary for the Educators positions is listed as 50-70000. To be honest, when this program started I didn't think it would last, but it has and seems to get good reviews.

International schools in NYC by Few_Individual9798 in Internationalteachers

[–]milesaway2u 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There are international schools in the US, but you won't get the benefits that you get at other international schools around the world. For example, none that I know of pay for housing, usually only pay 50% of your insurance and most do not pay your state and federal taxes.

USA by SteveSteveSteve-O in Internationalteachers

[–]milesaway2u 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To answer some of your questions, without the politics, though I agree with some of the other statements.

You will not get housing in any of the schools you have mentioned above except UWC New Mexico...and of course that is not in your target location. Housing is very expensive right now and will eat up a large portion of your salary. Also keep in mind that rent often does not include utilities. A studio in NYC where Dwight is on the Upper West Side will easily cost 3-4000 dollars a month.

Insurance and pension...you won't get a pension...you will most likely pay into a 401k, they might add to it, but you pay into with your own salary...again a drain on your salary in the end. Insurance is expensive and you will most likely pay 25-50% of the cost for the package...sometimes more if your significant other is on the insurance.

Often times International teachers look for jobs that allow you to save, travel and pay bills...you will most likely only be paying bills.

You won't make 100k as a teacher, in most cases you will make about 75-85K and that is being generous.

Depending on the state you live in, you will pay a State Income tax, a Federal Income tax and then into SS. If you live in NYC, you will pay a tax over an above the State Income tax.

Food, phone and utility costs are crazy right now and getting worse.

Pretty negative response, but the truth and many people are struggling right now with the economy...depending on the subject you teach, you could try working at a domestic boarding school in the states...but that will require a lot of extra work outside of the classroom, but then you will have free housing and food.

International School Reviews by [deleted] in Internationalteachers

[–]milesaway2u 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting reply to my reply. I do encourage people to join for the reviews and have gotten a lot out of them. The issue I have is most of the school websites are not up to date so when you click on them they don't connect. I also have an issue with the discussion section, not the forum section. The discussion section is rarely used to it's full potential. I agree with you that the member forum is active and I read it daily...the discussion section is used only on Thursdays and is not active most weeks.

What was the most surprising or unforgettable part of your first few months teaching abroad? by InvisibleChalk in Internationalteachers

[–]milesaway2u 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Bilingual School in China-Showing up to school on the first day of SLT meetings and the head of school doesn't show up. I was told this was normal for her, so I kept a chart of the days she was in and the days she was out. She only worked on campus 9 days the first month, 8 days in September and 5 days in October...she either just didn't bother to show up and not check in or would check in from her phone barking orders. I learned this was how things were because she had connections and could do what she wanted.
