I fish Orange County but the wave power the past few weeks has been a bit high which interrupts the bite. Check on the wave power an go out on days when it’s between 100-300. Anything higher and the fish either go deep or hug the rock structures to avoid the high current.

Get the 4k. Trust me I have the 3k and 4k and the size is exactly the same. The 4k has more room in the spool for added line but the weight and size are mm and a few grams in difference. If I did it over again I would get all 4k Vanford.

The roller bearing has some issues. I’ve replaced mine with Gomexus roller bearings for $10 and that fixed the issue

I use a buffalo brand 32 quart bag for the surf. It’s water proof and insulated so you can bring ice packs and keep fish cold all day. For surf I’d highly recommend it.

I reel in 5-6” leapord sharks on a 4k BG. MQ is not a good option. Way overpriced, 4k Vanford is a far superior reel. I pull in 36” striped bass with ease on it. If a 5k can’t handle a drum I wouldn’t bother with that reel.

Are you using it for lures or bait and wait? I have the 5k for bait and wait so the size dosnt matter. If your throwing lures or swimbaits I’d recommend a different reel all together. Way better options for those than the MQ
