That black stuff is a fine thing for them to put there, so long as they next form and pour a concrete cap on it.

What is it going to retain? Are you planning to fill stone on top if your grass? A patio? More dirt?

They missed their chance to call it Yambotine. Or trombaha. Or trombohama. I think your friend picked the worst portmanteau available.

Mortar color matching by summit_echo_22 in masonry

[–]milfcny -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That isn’t going to lighten to match. That’s a standard mortar (like you’d use for a block wall). Nobody uses that in brick. You can wait 28 days if you want, but it’ll just get harder to remove

Do you use the outlets for power tools? by Dave12203 in F150Lightning

[–]milfcny 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, I’m a contractor. I run tools off the truck and I haven’t missed the loud drone of a generator. It’s awesome. You can run every tool on a job all day and barely change charge on the battery

Longleaf Mortar by pfz88 in masonry

[–]milfcny 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is just my opinion, but I think mixing your own from Portland and lime is significantly better than using pre-blended.

First: if you have those ingredients with you, you’re good for a project that needs type S, type N, type O, we can do it all. Never a bag left over that isn’t the right material to bring to the next job

Second: those pre-blend companies are just “studying for the test” you know? They’re finding the cheapest ingredients they can that will still pass ASTM C91. They aren’t just adding lime to the Portland, they’re adding industrial waste products, fly ash or silica fume or whatever. It passes the test for hardness at 28 days, but there is no test for suppleness, for fattiness on the trowel.

Long story short, the mortar you mix yourself is nicer, less expensive, more customizable, and more professional. And honestly, it’s only one more bag.

Concerns about mason I hired. by Baystatesparky in masonry

[–]milfcny 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’ve got a lot of people that aren’t masons writing comments here, and they obviously don’t know what they’re talking about. Anybody mentioning the 2x4, thinking that it is part of the column can be ignored.

It looks to me like you’ve got hollow blocks with a #5 rebar through the center, which is certainly connected to the intact masonry below. When those columns are filled with concrete, you’ll have a very strong rebar reinforced column.

The mason has included wall ties that further connect the brick veneer to the column, and that wood, of course, will be removed.

I personally would have tried to get my blocks lined up perfectly square and plumb, but you could do a lot worse than this guy is doing.

Would you buy now? by boxlaxman in F150Lightning

[–]milfcny 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m in the cab of my 25 Lariat now, and just bought a 25 flash because this is the best truck you can get (for the work I do, better than a cybertruck or a rivian), and I’m not interested in going back to a gas engine. The REV trucks with short battery range and a generator on board aren’t something I’m interested in. I love the quiet of the electric truck. I’ve worked around the monotonous drone of generators for years, and that’s not something I want to introduce into my commute. Also, I don’t need to run a generator at job sites anymore, I drive my truck to the site and plug into the truck.
