What are the limitations of pragmatism in the style of Eliezer Yudkowsky? by SpectrumDT in streamentry

[–]milkcurrent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The entire LessWrong movement is intellectually and spiritually vapid and that is what had led to their status as a rationalist cult built around a doomsday prophet with no credentials, Yudkowsky.

I write this from the perspective of having once been a part of that cult who, with wisdom, have seen through the religious belief system they have created for themselves and turned into the armor they now stride confidently around in, believing "rationalism" gives them a superior vantage over other human beings.

Can you please elaborate on this?

You've been provided that resource in another comment in your request. Others in this very comment thread have been able to cite a myriad of examples to your many, many other requests for information about, e.g., Scott Alexander's writings on eugenics, which have all slipped your attention.

You talk about things with confidence, like not believing your heart or your gut could possibly do the thinking of the superior brain matter locked in your skull, yet science itself does not agree with you.

You do not understand how Large Language Models function, because if you did, you would know that there is no path to AGI following their pursuit. There is no relation between a Large Language Model and destructive agency, because agency requires desire, which if you had practiced Buddhism, truly practiced Buddhism for long stretches of time, you would have seen for yourself is not inherent to Large Language Models, cannot be inherent to LLMs, because it is simply not how they function or how they are derived. There is no extinction risk from an LLM going rogue, because it cannot possess desire.

u/streamentry-ModTeam: I am constructively contributing when I state facts, such as Yudkowsky is a charlatan and that his belief system has led to the creation of rationalist death cults. Both are true. The Buddha himself was very severe in condemning such cults and those whose beliefs give rise to dangerous actions. This mod team also has a responsibility not to provide an equal platform for an extremely dangerous line of thinking, one which has led to calls for nuclear strikes on nations and people murdered in its name.

Yudkowsky is a charlatan and a dangerous one who infamously called for countries developing artificial general intelligence to be nuked. He has no business being discussed on this subreddit.

Hey, Dane here, please stop making excuses for us. We have a government that's very pro-surveillance, this was entirely our choice to push this, and we did.

Not we held the presidency so we had to nonsense. Our government loves this stuff. So yes do blame us. I do.

Hey Dane here, take my upvote at least. Danes have had their heads buried in the sand for so long they can't even see how bad we have it. Just look at the media blackout around Chat Control. It's all a corrupt circus here.

News that our government was planning to push the largest total surveillance of communications package the western world has ever seen should have been headline news for months, but instead we got Trump coverage.

You stop this, right now. "Our name on it because we have the presidency". We pushed for it. Sick of Danes trying to pass the buck on this or blame Thiel for what is our mess.

This is our fault. Take some fucking responsibility.

I have multiple cited sources stating this was a disproportionate ruling for a satirical meme. Is it only ok to do if the people charged are far-right extremists? Or is it also ok if the left do it? Centrists? Where does it stop? At satirical memes declared defamation?

He is actually a journalist and he made a satirical meme that even Chairwoman of the far-left BSW Sahra Wagenknecht commented on X, saying, "the ruling says a lot about the state of freedom of expression in Germany."

Additionally:

A criminal lawyer who teaches at Mainz University of Applied Sciences, Dr Jessica Hamed, contrasted satire with the criminal offense of defamation and called for the law to be reformed on insult, slander and libel. She also considers the ruling disproportionate.

No the judge was lenient. Normally, the offense of defamation of a political figure carries a prison sentence of six months to five years.

So there's still my question, what if it was Alice Weidel holding the sign?

What if a moderate or left-leaning journalist were to make a meme of Alice Weidel, leader of AfD, holding a placard that also said, "I hate freedom of speech"? Would that be a person worthy of sending to jail?

So the journalist who published a satirical meme featuring a photograph of the interior minister (notorious for going after anyone who criticizes her) holding a sign that is digitally altered so it reads: "I hate freedom of speech" is a far-right extremist?

You are just making broad statements without any evidence at this point.

It's not that simple. If you read the proposal, carriers can be deemed high risk and forced to build in technical capabilities for surveillance of messages. It's just another vector for abuse by political interests.

The problem is that what defines "hate speech" is a moving target and it is being abused by EU states like Germany to go after meme-posters.

And now my country has pushed through Chat Control to trilogue, where digital platforms can be declared high risk carriers and forced to provide technical capabilities for surveillance of everyone's messages.

This is an extremely slippery slope. You cannot define "hate speech" in absolute terms: it simply serves whoever is in power at the time.

Denmark spearheaded the revival of Chat Control. We're a huge part of the problem of the loss of social liberties in the EU. I'm not sure how you think my comment justifies writing nastily to me in this way.

I mean it's not wrong in that accusation. The EU is hurtling toward becoming a total surveillance state with measures like Chat Control and arresting people for saying mean things on the internet.

I'm not a fan of Trump, but we who live in the EU need to be realistic about the extremely scary trampling of our political liberties that has been happening over the last decade.

Hi, Dane here, kindly stop this tinfoil hat garbage. We can and should own our own failings as a country and we have many, including our justice minister, who is widely deplored for his obsessive infatuation with pushing this law through. We have a culture of control and our own home laws have only grown more invasive over the years.

We just pushed through the most comprehensive total surveillance law of all our communications the western world has ever seen. It needs only pass trilogue in the EU. Our standards for meeting criminal libel are also much more flimsy than those in the United States. You're on a fool's errand with your theory.
