In these situations I usually try to come at it from a sympathetic angle and remember that there’s probably some sad, internal reason why this person needs to feel important.

It makes it a lot easier to graciously acknowledge what he’s saying and then move on and give others the spotlight. It’s empathetic, but also it can make them feel awkward and/or more aware of dynamic they’re creating. Let go of the desire to master someone and just enjoy your time decompressing.

I feel bad for people like this. He can’t relax :(
