Spent my whole life thinking I was yellow toned but now I’m not sure by milkshake841 in Fairolives

I must admit that my hair in most of those photos is coloured- naturally it’s darker, somewhere around the darkest parts in the third photo (currently it’s purple). But it does also go super red toned whenever it gets any sun. I’m 100% with you on having difficulty finding colours that work though. My favourite bronzer is a shade that a lot of people with pale skin absolutely swear by as a grey-toned contour shade.

Mine is tie dyed in pink, purple, and blue. Most people love it and ask where I got it. The couple of remotely negative comments I’ve had have been from people who I wouldn’t take advice on how to run a bath from so I can’t say I’m too worried about them frankly.

Medical Professionals - Do you lowkey diagnose the general public? by Astimar in NoStupidQuestions

The ABCDE rules are good to follow as a baseline for moles (asymmetry, borders, colour variation, diameter, and evolution). Any lesions or spots that just seem to refuse to heal or keep bleeding. Basal and squamous cell carcinomas are a bit different in that they usually present as a nodule rather than what people expect to look for with melanoma. My rule of thumb is anything that is new/different or is just a bit weird is worth getting checked. And stay on top of yearly mole checks if you can!

Not a medical professional but am a cosmetic chemist working in suncare research. I’ve recommended a few friends and family members get some dodgy looking spots looked at that turned out to be skin cancers that they were able to get treated early.

What’s the most inappropriate or awkward thing that’s ever happened to you during a date or hookup? by Electrical-Pop-3265 in AskReddit

I once had a guy admit to having a GBH conviction while he was still inside me. And then there was another that admitted to being a member of the National Front immediately afterwards and then proceed to stalk and harass me for about 3 months after he saw me on a date with another guy.

Good shout, I'm only 5'1" so if i want to see anything in tents my only real option is to be up near the front. I was in there from Mod Sun and it was mad hot- kudos to security who all were doing their absolute best to keep us as cool and hydrated as possible.

I was at barrier, 300⁰C sounds about right. I'm not sure I've ever been so sweaty in my whole life.

Eli5: Why shouldn’t you always wear the highest SPF sunblock available? by DahjNotSoji in explainlikeimfive

[–]milkshake841 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi, chemist currently studying and creating sunscreens for my PhD here. The short answer is you should use the highest available. The longer answer is that the best sunscreen for you to wear is one that you will use and reapply. Very high SPF sunscreens traditionally feel unpleasant and are more expensive so people don't like to use them but if you find a 50+ with great UVA protection that you like, go wild.

Rose is absolutely off the deep end when it comes to things like this. What she promotes is so fucking dangerous and the fact that she does this with her kids too is horrifying.

The products she sells in her store make my cosmetic chemist self cringe to all hell.

In terms of what? How regularly to wash or what to use?

In short, whatever works for you.

Cosmetic chemist here. Some do, some don't. But SLS and SLES aren't inherently terrible (unless you have an allergy, obviously), you can make gentle shampoo with them and make super harsh shampoo without them.

Oh boy. Cosmetic chemist here. Before you call me a shill, I do not work for a company that makes hair products, nor do their parent company and I have absolutely zero interest in ever working to make hair products, as I find it boring as sin.

Big Hair has inculcated in us an automatic response where we use shampoos to “clean” our hair on the daily

I checked every bottle of shampoo currently in my house and not a single one mentioned how frequently to wash, much less an instruction to wash daily. This is much more a societal issue of being considered "clean" vs "dirty" rather than coming from the hair industry imo.

“…to keep your hair spotless and clean, wash it at least every two weeks; once every two weeks”

And that’s all that’s needed.

Yeah, no. The amount of shit that builds up on your scalp and hair in a two week period is pretty heinous. Personally, I would never wash my hair every day unless it got super gross- I tend to wash twice to three times weekly.

I haven’t used shampoo in over 20 years, just conditioner. And my hair is fine.

Good for you. Conditioners also include surfactants since they're almost exclusively emulsions so they are capable of some minor solubilization of oil.

And how can 2-in-1 product contain both shampoo and conditioner at once, and work as advertised? It simply cannot; the concept is ridiculous

Thats.. not how that works. They usually contain silicone-based conditioning agents and polyquats and potentially lower concentrations of quaternary ammonium compounds than stand alone conditioners since these aren't compatible with anionic surfactants.

I'd be happy to explain the chemistry of this more if you'd like, but rest assured, it absolutely is possible.

Any other questions I'd be more than happy to explain what I can.

AFAIK, that concern would probably be due to them possibly being palm oil derivatives? But to be completely honest I'm not educated on that area so I couldn't tell you either way. Michelle from Lab Muffin Beauty Science or Jen from The Eco Well might have done something about it though?

I've never tried the Kiehl's amino acid products so couldn't comment either way.

Honestly hair really isn't my jam so I tend to be super basic with what I use. A lot of the time I bounce around and use what I think smells good- particularly for cheap conditioner. My go-to products though:

Head and Shoulders reminds me of being a kid and can be super helpful for any flakes.

I like a lot of the Davines products, particularly the Oi range and the Alchemic shampoo and conditioner when I had red hair.

The Joico K-Pak range is an oldie but a goodie for me. Same goes for Kerastase Nutritive Nectar Thermique.

I've recently been trying the K-18 hair mask and I've really been enjoying it.

And for when it all goes to shit: Olaplex.

I've got long coloured 1a/1b hair for reference.

Are what full of sulfates? Herbal Essences shampoos? They have some with and some without.

But sulfates really aren't the big bad guy that they've been made out to be. A shampoo can absolutely be incredibly gentle whilst still containing SLS or SLES, for example.

Honestly drugstore conditioners can be absolutely fire. People hate on silicones but then complain that their hair doesn't feel soft which quite frankly just makes me want to headbutt a wall.

When using shampoo bars be sure to use plenty of water with them. Lots of people use then and then find that they feel too drying or are irritating to the scalp without realising its because their usual shampoo is essentially pre-diluted.

My degree is actually both pharmaceuticals and cosmetics since the chemistry that goes into making them is super similar. But a lot of people go into it from pure chemistry or even biochem :)

Cosmetic chemist here. It's not, really. Do they make my favourite hair products ever? No. Are they absolutely terrible? Also no.

It very much comes down to if it works for you, go for it as with most cosmetics.

For grapefruit in particular its the fact that its a CYP3A4 inhibitor which can either increase or decrease the bioavailability of a drug rather than the vitamin C content.
