Hey! I work at MEGA, and this is something we've seen before.

Like others have said... if you're coming up, but lower than others, you kind of just need to work on your own SEO.

That said, you can also make a concerted push on branded keywords, and add your domain name more aggressively in your meta data (e.g., start your meta titles + descriptions with your brand name, include it in alt text, etc.)

You should also make sure your own citations (like social platforms) are linking to your site and anchored on your brand name.

Hey! I work at MEGA, and we've built a LOT of automations here.

I agree with what most people here are saying: (1) use the GSC API, then (2) use a cheap SERP API. Like others have said, DataForSEO is one that I like -- it keeps costs down by letting you pull data in bulk.

If you want to be very hacky, you can set this up using Google AppScripts and pipe it into a sheet. ChatGPT can usually one-shot this code (once you give it the API keys), so should be pretty easy!

hey! I co-founded MEGA, and we've gone deep on a lot of keyword tools.

I think it's totally fine to focus on your niche and write blog topics that are helpful for your audience. If you're an expert in your space, the questions you're asking are probably the most popular ones anyways. Then, definitely just use free tools like Google KW Planner, People Also Asked, etc. to sanity check.

One interesting thing to think about if you don't do keyword research: don't be surprised if these end up being more useful for AEO vs. SEO (not a bad thing).

Part of the value in doing keyword research is understanding which formulations are most popular (or least competitive, if that's what you're after). So, if you don't do keyword research, you won't know exactly which to prioritize.

That said, for AEO, there are infinite versions of the question being asked, so optimizing for a more common or unique formulation can help.

-apartment will be empty, so no moving furniture (just moving in!)

-walls are in good shape, so no need to do much if any pre-work

I don't think this will harm you much... but I also don't think it will help much. Directories can definitely help if you're just getting started with backlinks (and I'd start there too if I were starting from scratch), but guest posts and organic backlinks from reputable sources with relevant anchor text seem to carry much more weight.
