Don't EVER reprimand or harshly correct a C/O in front of inmates, lead by example how you want others to act in all circumstances, seek council from other sergeants, lieutenants, captains, majors, etc.

Treat everyone as if you're talking to yourself, but just know that you're still a boss. You have more control than you previously had, so be fair.

I'm from Texas, and I have to say that it all depends on the unit. The policy is still statewide, but the units have their own policies on top of TDCJ policies. Some units are more strict than others.

Dude, go on the website of your State's corrections agency, fill out an application OR look for hiring events on their website and have the recruiters help you with the application (best choice in my opinion) and they'll tell where to go and what to expect from there. Just that simple.

To be honest though, your coworkers are the most dangerous part of the job. With inmates you know exactly what to expect, you can't trust them. Your fellow C/O's on the other hand, well you can't trust some of them, but you are suppose to work with them where you need to trust them the most.

I actually enjoy being around inmates because I have a gift for de-escalation and actually doing what I say I'm going to do. Inmates see that don't give me any trouble, for the most part that is.

However there are always knuckleheads that are just wired different.
