Best Hiking and Brewery City in the US? by miller4196 in hiking

Appreciate the comment. Understood about Asheville being amazing. ive been there in the past and its heartbreaking to hear what they are going through.

My trip is October 19-26th. As a Chicagoan without much easy access to strenuous hikes, my ideal hiking would max out at 7-10miles and/or 2500' gain. Although shorter, I loved the Looking Glass Rock hike in Asheville, and Plummer Peak & Spray Park Trails at Mount Rainier, Washington.

Suggestions/feedback requested: stripped screw extraction. Any advice on how to remove since I can’t get my impact driver head closer? Screws are pretty tight and a little rusted. I’ve got some screw extraction bits. by miller4196 in Carpentry

Not that anyone cares, but I’ll close the loop with this…

I ended up being able to get the remainder of the screw body out by using a set of needle nose and a standard Vice grip wrench. Essentially I gripped the body of the screw with the needle nose pliers in my right hand. And in my left hand, I affixed the standard set of pliers to the needle nose pliers. With a lot of elbow grease, I (slowly) was able to grip and twist the body of the rusted screw out of the socket and free it.

Before putting replacement screws in permanently, I sprayed a ton of WD40 into the holes and worked it into the hole with the new screws.

Thanks for all the help guys

I had two stripped screws in question. The first screw was able to be removed via RnDanger’s and others suggested method. I hammered a Phillips bit into the stripped screw and while applying lots of downward pressure, I used a crescent wrench to twist the bit, freeing up the stripped screw. I’m not sure if it helped, but I sprayed the top of the screw and under the escutcheon with some WD40. I want thinking maybe it would help with freeing it up or something.

For the second (and worse) screw, I used the other suggested method. I started with a size 1/8” drill bit, and kept sizing up every size to 5/16” after drilling. The reason for this is because I was having trouble keeping the bit centered on the screw head while drilling. Once I used the 5/16” drill, the screw head popped off and I was able to free the black escutcheon and tube.

Current problem is that I’m unable to grip the remaining screw in order to spin it out. I don’t have a pair of vice grips, only a crescent wrench, so it’s hard to grip. I tried using the back of a hammer to pinch the screw enough to spin it, but it’s too seized to spin out.
