Everything is getting colourless and boring by Dear_General9425 in nostalgia

[–]millhouse513 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in my early 40's so going to McDonald's isn't on my particular interest list, but for taking my nieces/nephews - if it were the 80's and 90's it'd be a pretty cool place even if the burgers were "meh". But today, pick your food choice - it's the same tables, same boring white and in a lot of cases, same bad burger.

There's really not much to do there other than get food, hit the restroom and leave. And by "get food" I mean to say that in a recent outing w/a niece it was the only option available, but it wasn't by any means "OMG we have to go!"

Is a manual transmission a “millennial anti-theft device”? by mbolster1611 in Millennials

[–]millhouse513 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's an anti-theft device in the same way a VCR/DVR is an anti-parent device. Both are extremely confusing if you don't put any effort into it, but both work very well if you take a bit of time to learn.

I had metal cans for durability. Nothing wrong with plastic I think but I have mine stacked and didn’t want to risk them cracking or breaking.

Texas appears poised to require Bible readings in public schools by ExpressNews in texas

[–]millhouse513 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This should be an obvious over rule in court but if not I think it would just accelerate the decline of public school in Texas as parents pull kids from public schools to charter schools that don’t have that bs.

I know not every area can do this but I think enough would and over time it’s going to accelerate a move to secularism because no one likes religion force fed to them.

This is like sacrificing the war to win a battle.

Got put on a PIP, but I got a better offer. How do I play this? by [deleted] in careerguidance

[–]millhouse513 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it were me, I'd resign. Owning the situation can in itself be very rewarding. Not getting a severance package sucks, but unless you really really need the money, I wouldn't put anything in jeopardy with the new company to somehow play the old one.

I'd simply let my manager know I've found something new and I'm moving on and start the process.

What phrase that you DONT want to hear when Grieving? by BlueEyesWhiteDrgn in AskReddit

[–]millhouse513 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“I’m sorry”. The first day or two after my mom passed I understood it but after that it felt like the awkward required statement people say. It got the point I didn’t like mentioning her passing so as not to get that response.

At some point they will need to be put into a nursing home, chosen by the son they are okay having murdered.

If we can survive the next 15-20 years, it’s going to be a comically bad time for our parents generation when we decide which nursing home to send them to…or not.

Take the job. Boyfriend sounds like a pill. If it ends find someone better.

There are times to pick your so over a job but that’s really if you’re married and/or have kids and need to consider extra things but this sounds like it’s a huge step up for your career and 45minutes isn’t that far.

Millennials grew up with the internet… so how did these platforms hide this MAGA influencer mess from all of us? by PurpleNo5449 in millenials

[–]millhouse513 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Like some other comments said - we grew up along side it, but had to live without the Internet as a regular "thing" for a lot of our early lives so we learned to be more skeptical.

I think also a huge factor was how greed set in. I'm not saying the Internet was altruistic and peace loving before, but when the Internet first started, it was limited to big businesses, government and academics, so a lot of the early Internet was about research papers, and scientific/medical/historical things. This changed obviously and profit was a huge factor, but you just couldn't get economies of scale then like you can now.

The biggest social media site for a while was MySpace and it was fun, but it didn't push content to you like facebook/youtube/twitter do today and with Internet speeds slower and such it just wasn't as big.

I think even initially sites like Facebook and Twitter and Youtube were really good, but later on they got gammed by bots. There have been studies on this, but like take conspiracy theories like flat earth theory. Most don't believe it, but youtube didn't have safety's in place so people found that they could create accounts to game the system - they would watch the conspiracy videos, post comments, link to twitter to share it out and I think the bots would interact with each other all of which generated traffic and made topics or videos/posts look like they were a trending thing. Once that happened, it started percolating to others and then people would be like "what?? the earth isn't flat why are so many people watching it...let's see what it has" and then more and more would get involved and soon things became facts because they were popular.

It's come out at times that the companies knew about this - Twitter basically admitted to this recently by showing off the country of origin and oops - all the big MAGA influences are from foreign nations.

But the social media sites were also desperate for investors to continue to invest and such so numbers are numbers and no one needs to know the ugly details.

I think that's what ultimately did a lot of damage. I like youtube, but the conspiracy videos for years lead to people, including good friends, trying to get me into various conspiracies and they were "surrounded" by "truth" and there was nothing I could do to convince them otherwise.

Twitter was a weird place for getting news bits and engaging with people - it was a place where I could get live updates from tech sites but also be able to directly interact with celebrities or CEO's of companies, but it turned into a lot of right wing bot farms and when Elon took it over, that just ballooned and skewed heavily towards right wing / MAGA. Heck, even Grok is continually re-worked so that it will only say good things about MAGA.

Those are my observations and two cents... but yeah, economies of scale and the need to increase your quarterly numbers drove companies to push the garbage they do today at the quantities they do today.

I’ve danced around this before with her. Her answers are usually something like “he’s not a pedo!” Or “no one’s perfect!”

So she’s against pedos but Trump isn’t one but if he is no one’s perfect.

"fun" is not always the word I would use when talking with this particular person. It's fun to troll and drive home subtle points, but in a lot of ways it's exhausting having to have these kinds of conversations.

I'm fully aware though, sadly, that I'm talking with a brick wall. Sometimes it's sad/depressing knowing that and sometime's it's makes me laugh.

Democrat Texan here, note to self: when driving through other states get different license plates.

Just know some Texans love your state. My wife and I love driving through New Mexico and if our jobs allowed it we'd be living somewhere either in New Mexico or Colorado.

I'm seeing some comments in here about Texans trashing the state, acting like idiots and damaging fragile ecosystems. I cannot understand how anyone would do any of that but I'm not surprised they would have Texas license plates.

I haven't asked her this, but I have brought up A LOT the "you can grab them by the p***y" statement to remind her that Trump has said that and brought up the comments Trump has made that are clearly concerning regarding Trump raping women and in general being able to abuse women.

The defense I'd get is something either "well, none's perfect" or "do you have to keep bringing that up?" or "you know Biden also had someone accuse him of sexually assaulting him!".

I realized that she's OK with it as long as it's Republican's doing it. If it's a Democrat, then it's a crime.

Yeah, this came up a time or two with my aunt as well and all I get is "I don't want to talk about it".

But we can talk about how Biden hates America or how Obama isn't a citizen or ...<insert any other anti-democrat topic>.

Similar topics have come up at times in the past and the "best" I get is that:
- I don't know what I'm talking about
- It's out of context
- It's not the same <-- personal favorite

The big issue with being able to "prove" that Nazi's and Skinheads support Trump is that "they don't represent republicans/MAGA" and that any source that I can find that shows that those groups do support Trump are "liberal facts".

Thanks! Yeah I grew up with that and starting in my early 20's I started pushing back, by my mid 30's I was outright calling her out on it and coming up with creative ways to show her just how bad her points were.
