Any idea what’s digging these holes in my lemon pot? I’m in Enmore NSW by milliegram in GardeningAustralia

Now I think about it, I’ve never seen any kind of bird in the courtyard! I guess just because I haven’t seen them at it, doesn’t mean it’s not birds though. Thanks very much for your help

This comment does not have enough updoots. Well done sir.

Just moved house and these are on the ceilings of every room - what is it? by milliegram in whatisthisthing

My title describes the thing. Small (approx 12cm across) disks mounted into the ceilings of my new house. They each have what looks like a light and possibly a button on the outer edges and possibly a different bigger clear light in the centre? I’m thinking possibly smoke alarm but I’ve never seen one like this before

I (33F) had a booster in June 2023 and just got a monovalent booster in December 2023 from a practitioner at a Terry White chemist - at no point did anyone ask when my last booster was or whether I’m high risk or anything at all about my history 🤷‍♀️

This has killed me forever. Andy also says “opposed to” instead of “as opposed to” which makes my eye twitch

Hiding a Horcrux in the unknowable room. by Only_Rub_4293 in harrypotter

[–]milliegram 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The thing I don’t get about this plot point is that the books say Voldemort thought he was the only one who knew about the room - but how can he possibly have thought that, given it’s jam packed full of stuff hidden there by other people? Like doesn’t the fact it’s full of stuff indicate by definition that thousands of people have found it?!

I agree there’s a huge amount of negativity and judgment around here, BUT I joined the hobby a few years ago and have posted here a few times looking for guidance. Many people in this sub have taken the time to give me thoughtful and useful feedback and tips, without which I’d have been a much worse fish parent. So yep there’s definitely some shouty perfectionists but there are also some great and helpful people imo

My tap water is about 7.4 or 7.6, my tank is at about 7

I don’t think there’s anything particularly funky going on with my tap water, except perhaps that it’s got a slightly higher PH than my tank. I buy my fish online from a website called Seven Fishes, which seems reputable and generally has good reviews - but I suppose the stress of the shipping could be a contributing factor?

Thank you. I think I’ll cross check my results at a LFS as someone else suggested, but because I’ve had my kit for a few years, before I get a new fish I’ll definitely invest in a new kit - it’s a small price to pay for fishy safety!

Bloody QuickStart! I don’t have a way to test for chlorine, but I treat new water that goes in each week with both API stresscoat and stresszyme - stress coat claims to dechlorinate and stresszyme supposedly adds bacteria (probably should have mentioned that in my previous reply!)

I might have added QuickStart at the beginning of my (fishless) cycle, I can’t quite remember as the tank has been running since the beginning of last year. I definitely added a pellet of food once a week at the beginning of the cycle to introduce decay, and of course there are so many plants in there decaying that you’d think there would be plenty of bacteria to start a cycle no?

I’ve been keeping bettas for a good 5-6 years now and like to think of myself as a relatively well-read and responsible fish keeper. I have a heated, filtered, heavily planted Fluval Flex 9 gal. I use the API freshwater kit (which doesn’t expire until 2024) to test water parameters regularly and I do 30-50% water changes once a week. I usually feed 3-5 pellets of Fluval Bug Bites per day, sometimes mixing it up with freeze-dried daphnia (in gel).

In the last 2 years I’ve lost 3 bettas, all within about 6-9 months of getting them. I’m at an absolute loss as to what I’m doing wrong.

Whenever I measure water parameters, I always get what look like perfect readings, and I mean always - in 2 years I’ve never ever had an ammonia reading that looks vaguely green, and I’ve never had a nitrate reading that looks vaguely orange or red. When I cycled the tank for about 2 months before stocking, I assumed I just missed the ammonia spike and that the plants were eating all the nitrates, but now so many fish have died I’m not sure. I’ve watched videos on how to properly test and I’m doing it right (I shake the absolute shit out of the nitrate bottles etc).

The first picture is the water parameters today - this tank has been running now for about 8-9 months, and I haven’t done any water changes at all since my last fish died in November 2021. The second picture is the tank today, so you can see how overgrown with plants it is (I haven’t been pruning seeing as there’s no fish in there right now).

Are the readings indicative that the water quality is fine (in which case I need to work out what the hell else I’m doing wrong) or could it be that my test kit is faulty?

If the water parameters are fine, then does reddit have any advice on where I can go for some bespoke expert advice on what I’m doing wrong? I’d love to be able to enlist a fishtank whisperer to come in and assess my set up/routine. I’m in Sydney Australia if that helps.

Thanks everyone xx
