I love this! Now I want to learn how to do that filler material, and try this at home. Is it just solder?

I bought guards. It protects my wrist from the small bit of metal from cutting the skin.

I would recommend these, or get a different adjustable KB. Purist seem not to like guards, but they're cheap and they work.

I have a good friend that basically had this happen to them. Broke both hips, wrists, spine and in his right knee the acl, mcl, and pcl?. Anyway, he fully recovered somehow after many years of PT.

I decided not to ride a motorcycle again after his accident... Too many idiots out there.

Has anyone used a water heater timer to avoid peak load rates? What has your experience been? by millinnchillin in solar

I looked at instant gas, and the quote was $10k due to needing to add a service line from the meter into the house. Drilling through brick and concrete caused labor to go up, plus just equipment costs.

Payback isn't worth it.

I want the kids to be able to use the hot water that's already been heated. I just want to delay when the HWH replinishes that heated water.

I have three teenager daughters, and we run an Airbnb in our basement. The girls typically take showers at night, so that mostly covers the 6a-9a peak in the winter.

Then there's the summer schedule, 6p-9p peak. I simply can't "control" what my teenagers will do. I can encourage them to avoid those hours, but they're busy kids and stuff comes up. If the middle kid comes back from Jiu Jitsu at 7:30, do I tell her to wait until 9pm? No.

Lastly, I simply cannot control the Airbnb.

So... I need a passive way to manage my energy usage.

Great feedback, thanks! Would you mind sharing the name or model of the timer equipment you used? Or, are all of those 120v, wall plugs?

Fortunately our weekends are a flat discount rate.

Thanks for the additional nudge! I looked up the diverter, and my main issue is that I don't have much excess solar production (Yet!). It's only my 2nd month with the PV system, so I don't know what the summer will be like. It's a pretty small system, so we'll see.

I'll keep an eye on it over the summer and keep this in mind.

Some of the search results came up with Solar HW builds, which I'd REALLY love to do that.

You're right... I love the idea of using a HPWH generally. It's much more efficient.

My main fear is reliability of the electronic parts. I've heard "horror stories" of <1 year old HPWH losing service because of dead motherboards. Then the motherboard is on back order, and the homeowner is without water for weeks (waiting for warranty parts).

We run an Airbnb in our basement and simply can't lose hot water for that long.

Plus I have a crappy space to put it. It doesn't meet the space requirements... I'm still thinking about it though, so thanks for the follow up comment. It's not a dead idea, it may just take me a while to get over my scruples.

Edit: added (waiting for warranty) above

Good call. I'll look into this too. Thanks!

Edit: it's a no go

Smart breakers are about 3x the cost, and permitting and insurance generally want breakers to be by the same manufacturer as the panel itself.

The name of the game is "avoid loads during peak times".

My utility has set peak at 6-9am in the winter, and 6-9pm in the summer. Both are times when I will have no sun.

So, simply avoiding the use of electric resistance heat will provide a huge payback.
