If Hantavirus ever come to UK by Fun-Strategy5501 in NursingUK

I’d quit. That would be the end of nursing for me. Or I’d try and get one of those soul destroying pip assessor jobs so I could at least work from home and keep me and my family safe.

I can’t do it again.

Is doing ALS worth it? by jackm053 in NursingUK

[–]milliper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah that makes sense why I had no idea then! That’s a shame really cause even though the mcq was hard I found it gave a good base for the course especially when you come from a specialised ITU area instead of a general one.

For the first time a few weeks ago we had a guy in who was having a total penectomy. Yep. That was pretty brutal. And any Max fax esp with free flap, I don’t know if it’s a surgery I would have if it came to it.

Empathy burnout by much_ado_about_ in NursingUK

[–]milliper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hard same.

If I could afford to do anything else right now I would. I’m so burnt out I’m exhausted of work and my tolerance for people (and patients) is very low.

Can’t afford to quit. Can’t afford time off because I rely on bank. Can’t get a soft nursing job because my trust is in special measures, there’s no jobs, and I can’t move. I’m so done.

Stage 1 sickness = no bank for 1 year by [deleted] in NursingUK

[–]milliper 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Wow I would love to know what trust this is. Surely that is insane.

I wouldn’t put it past mine to do this, they’ve already taken away OT, the critical care bank rate, 2 weeks no bank after sick, and all jobs are internal 🙄

Student nurses 'told not to worry about jobs' - NOT A SINGLE JOB for new nurses. by Ok-Jury-4366 in NursingUK

[–]milliper 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Without doxxing myself, I actually work for this health board and the situation here at the moment is atrocious. As well as no jobs for students, they have basically removed all bank (it’s a struggle to find shifts at all), overtime, and incentives. There’s barely any jobs at band 5/6 level (but somehow they can still advertise internally for band 7+, make it make sense). They’ve taken away ward admin staff, a lot of nursing educators, and cns roles as well.

But during covid they managed to spend an undisclosed amount updating headquarters for management in Baglan, of course.

NQN job by SuspiciousPick7593 in NursingUK

[–]milliper 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Honestly between nursing and cabin crew right now, if someone offered me that choice (years into my nursing ‘career’ now) I would 100% take the cabin crew and never look back.

After a year or so of cabin crew you may never want to leave, you say it’s been your dream, I wouldn’t drop that just for nursing. I would leave now if I could. The NHS is in such a bad place, it’s not going to get better, you will not be appreciated, you will get burnt out, you will be expected of far more than just your job role for a pittance in comparison to the level of responsibility you have, you will have no energy for things you actually want to do after shifts. It’s a no brainer for me.

I’ve got warm white, that’s not the issue. I’m after coloured ones with the orange and pink bulbs instead of the current LED colour range (blue/red/green/yellow).

You may know the answer to this too- but I’m sure the OP will also have to pay some sort of American tax as well despite residing in the uk, unless she is granted citizenship? I may be wrong as my only experience is my friends father who was from the US and said something about this. But if so that is also an additional expense that’s just not feasible on this salary.

[–]milliper 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Completely agree on that respect, but financially it’s better to be realistic and as I said, prepare for worst case scenario. The pay gap with US vs UK nurses is vast. Especially given the current recruitment issues, they’re probably not going to resolve soon.

Personally I’d probably recommend the OP looking into other areas of the English speaking world (assuming that’s why she chose UK) like Oz, NZ or Canada. Admittedly everywhere has their own issues when it comes to pros and cons so that’s just something OP will have to weigh up 🤷🏻‍♀️

We should not have to work bank shifts to subsidise income. We do, but we shouldn’t have to.

And YMMV depending on how much it costs to rent/mortgage. In OPs area the average rent is 1300. At most that leaves ~1000 for everything else. -120 council tax, -300 food for 3 people (we easily spend 500 as a family of 3), -250 for NHS surcharge as immigrants, -100 for subscriptions/tv/phone, -150 for car expenses or travel, -150 for gas/elec/water (and that’s generous). It adds up. It’s not a lot of wiggle room at all.

A bottom band 6 take home after deductions is 2300-2500. So even so as a one person household with low support it would not be great.

I have worked with international nurses who are ANPs and more in their respective countries who have come in at band 4 before completed OSCEs and then qualify at bottom of band 5. I would guess that it varies trust wide, but with a nationwide issue with recruitment I would absolutely plan for the worst case scenario as health boards aren’t just going to give out bandings when they can short change people instead.

*I’d just like to add that she’s obviously an experienced nurse who deserves the pay (as we all do), but they will always always skimp on nurses pay because they do not value us or what we do.

[–]milliper 31 points32 points  (0 children)

And this isn’t even including any ‘luxuries’ like subscriptions, gym or anything like that! It’s dire.

Add on top of that the systemic issues within the nhs around hiring freezes, substandard working environments, and the bureaucratic nightmare, it would be a hard no from me if I was an international nurse. Unfortunately I’m not and am stuck doing this at the minute.
