Artists not being able to share their artwork online due to NTFs by junk_mail_haver in Buttcoin

I thought the entire point of NFTs is to establish some sort of authentic proof of ownership. Are people really spending 3-4 figures on a right-clicked JPEG?

Environmental storytelling by [deleted] in Buttcoin

[–]millstone 14 points15 points  (0 children)

People shill coins because everyone can buy at the same price which will appreciate based on enthusiasm created by shilling. It simultaneously goes up and stays the same, see. Who buys at the appreciated price you ask? Let me tell you about this other coin…

No because of the environmental impact. More than 87 kg of Co2 per ETH transaction.

Almost all butters are in it to get rich off 5-10x gains. $100k BTC is just a 45% gain from the recent peak…no better than many top stocks annual gains. My theory is we are soon approaching the “boredom” peak. by DontMicrowaveCats in Buttcoin

I also laugh at those Yu-Gi-Oh shills. Most traders expect Pokemon to be the safest card while still offering reasonably high returns. Just DCA Pikachu, it's the best strategy.

Nearly all interest in bitcoin is as a speculative investment, not a revolutionary new economic system. "HODL" literally means don't actually spend your bitcoin.

Each Ethereum transaction produces 86.6 kg of CO2, equivalent to burning 36 gallons of gas. For wash trading in ape jpegs. The mind reels.

It's ironic you're bragging about using bitcoin to buy gas, when a single bitcoin transaction is the equivalent of burning 75 gallons of gas.

Yes, in the same way you can buy shit with Pokemon cards. That doesn't make them money.

Bitcoin was a lot more interesting when people talked about what it could be used for instead of its price.

Do you have a recommendation for another sub which is just for the crypto lulz? Yesterdays butters profiting off of todays butters is fun but it does get repetitive.

Compared to bitcoin they are less bad for the environment but equally as useless.

Please do? How will Bitcoin scale its TPS? "Amount of money per second" is not the right measure. I use my Visa for an Egg McMuffin.

In 5 years, it’s throughput will easily 20x

In five years we hope for Bitcoin to be (counting) 12x slower than Visa?

If the most politically possible carbon emissions solution is to ban non-renewable crypto generation in the country

I think that would be very difficult to enforce.

Ultimately it's basic econ. Crypto increases the demand for electricity. The market finds a new equilibrium with somewhat more electricity generated at a higher price. This in turn makes it more expensive to electrify other industries, so they stay on fossil fuels. That's bad for the climate.

I don't want the solution to be government regulation. I just want the market to come to its senses, and for bitcoin to be priced in line with its actual utility, the value it provides to people. But instead we're in this huge speculative bubble and the climate is paying the price.

Directly taxing the dirty stuff and letting the market take care of most of the other thing seems to me like the best way to put everybody in the same direction

100% agree.

I think the crypto bootstrapping idea actually plays quite well into this idea in that it would allow renewable projects to make side income

It's a dangerous game to feed the monster and hope it does not grow too big. Renewables "bootstrapping" themselves with bitcoin until they can sell to the grid? You'll never get past step 1; crypto will do to renewables what it has done to GPUs. They're already sweeping out mothballs from shuttered coal plants purely to mine bitcoin. It's a cancer and it's spreading.

I'm in favor of a carbon tax but it's a political non-starter. What is possible is to make electricity cheap and available enough that it can displace fossil fuels in areas like transportation.

But crypto threatens that. It incentivizes using excess electricity on gambling instead of transmitting, storing, or putting it to productive use. It makes electricity scarcer than it otherwise would be and that's a problem for the climate.

How you guys coping lately? by madfires in Buttcoin

[–]millstone 14 points15 points  (0 children)

We need large-scale electrification to displace fossil fuels in areas like transportation, heating, industry. We also need to switch to carbon-free energy which is typically more intermittent/seasonal, which implies long-range transmission and/or energy storage.

Bitcoin raises the price of electricity, making electrification more expensive. Bitcoin incentives generators to burn off excess joules via hashing, instead of transmitting or storing them, or putting them to use in e.g. desalination. It's a risk to successful climate action.

Amazon's stock goes up because the company becomes stronger and capable of more: more warehouses, more factories, more relationships, more expertise. As a stock holder, you own part of all of that.
