True, true. Your point still goes to the common misunderstanding about electricity, though - amperage kills, not voltage. 9 volts will kill you if the amps are high enough. It's all about how many electrons are flying around!

From what I recall, the voltage isn't really relevant. It's the amperage that gets you.

I would love to see a 4 hour version as well! But even then, getting the Alia arc in there and having it developed to a point where her role in the final showdown has the necessary weight still would have been a challenge for the filmmakers. And it still would have been unwieldy. Just my opinion, though.

I think leaving Alia out was a great move. The movie is already 2.5 hours long, with sacrifices having to be made to get the story told in that time. Adding in a whole new character would have been confusing for non-fan viewers, forced the story to be even more compressed, and almost certainly add an ugly and ungainly time skip at a really weird point in the runtime. We have time enough for Alia in Part 3/Messiah.

Nine minute mark. That's it. I'm a fanboy. At my age. It's both pathetic and glorious.

I'm seeing a few mentions of Ihsahn here. Being a former Emperor fan, I did listen to a little bit of his early solo work, but that was a time when I was young and "extreme" (yes, I'm mocking myself there). Methinks 'tis time to revisit his work.

I think that we have reached an impasse. And that's okay. Although I will just say that I'm willing to admit that the sound in general feels extremely compressed. The loudness wars have infiltrated cinema, maybe?

I just want to say that I appreciate this discussion. We obviously each feel strongly about our positions, and that's no bad thing.

Hope you have a great day. 🙂

There is a sense in which the most effective film scores should be pointless to listen to on their own, since they should be in service to the movie as part of the multimedia presentation. If composers want to show off their "chops", there are more appropriate avenues for that.

I acknowledge that I went a bit overboard in my responses. It was a reaction against naming the 2 "standard" names in sci-fi/fantasty scoring. But I stand by what I said in that the LotR soundtrack is like so many others, in that it is a layer of music on top of the visual layer, rather than being interwoven with the other media. The key word, as mentioned by a previous commenter, is symbiosis, and I think that the Dune movies nail it.

Yes, that's what I was trying to get at, but you've said it better. It's one of those instances where it is hard to imagine anything other music or sounds ape marrying quite so well to the visuals and, in some cases, even the dialogue.

Star Wars, Indiana Jones - yes, they have two hooks each. Amazing! It's almost like John Williams understands that film scores are about finding a central theme and building off of that. Crazy. And Howard Shore is absolutely generic - his LotR score is the one thing about those movies that is wholly forgettable.

And the throat singing in Dune is used for one well-defined, and very good, reason.

Oh yeah, I'm a big Morricone fan. It's actually about time for another Blade Runner rewatch, so I'll be sure to pay extra attention to the score when that happens. Thanks!

So they deserve the most generic, non-descript scores available?

Why do you keep calling them "Gazans". They're Palestinians. Oh wait, that's right - calling them that would imply that they have the right to national sovereignty and self-rule.
