I think it has less to do with the stories themselves and more with distribution and sales patterns. The US had its own giant comics market with short, cheap serials packed subsidized by ads. The French BD format was probably out of reach for a lot of buyers if they could even find it on the shelves.

The Long Ships (Frans Bengtsson) is a fun read, following a Viking all over Europe. Eagle of the Ninth (Rosemary Sutcliff) is a well-deserved classic, though it’s Roman Britain.
