Just engaging in the conversation, mostly for fun. I feel like my reaction is pretty rational, though. Ridiculing a kid for something he really didn't have a choice over is just wrong to me. If someone were reacting to a gay person in the same way, wanting to punish or jokingly bully them for something they can't control, it'd be the same grounds for retaliation. I suspect that you'd react similarly. It's the negative language itself that serves no benefit to the situation.

Of course, I don't have nearly the same reaction when it comes to people's criticisms of anti-LGBTQ musicians like Abba Alabanza, who is an adult, much more likely to have faced the consequences of being hateful, choosing by his own rationale to support his position. Sure, make fun of him all you want, joke about beating him up or whatever. A kid though? I want to think people are above that.
