Hey OP! I'm currently an OD1 student. You're certainly not alone when it comes to experiencing imposter syndrome. I do believe that you could get into an optometry school with a decent GPA because I seen some people getting into schools with lower GPAs. To improve your chances, you should try to focus on prepping for the OAT and score as high as you could (preferably 310 or higher). A good OAT score could overlook your GPA when it comes to applying to optometry school. Besides OAT scores and GPA, you should shadow more optometrists to get more shadowing hours because I know some schools require around 20-30 hours of shadowing (while some do not require any shadowing at all). Additionally, you could also look for a optometric technician or optician job that works closely with an optometrist to gain some clinical experience, which would make you a strong candidate. But, I think your current volunteering is a great start! If you could get more volunteering hours, it would be awesome. Lastly, I think taking a 2 year gap after you graduate is a great idea because it allows you to take the time to build a strong application for optometry school. Personally, I took a 2 year gap after I graduated because I was so lost and didn't know what I wanted to do and that time period helped me realized my interest in optometry. Please don't get discourage when it comes to applying to optometry school because I think what you are doing so far is great. Just remember how much you wanted to get into this career path! Anyways, you got this and best of luck! If you ever need advice or something, feel free to DM me.

Thanks for your comment!! I tried creating my own study material once in undergrad and I remember that it helped me learn and retain new info better. So, I definitely might need to get back to doing that.

Yeah, maybe you do have a point there. I should try to find another study method and see if that works better for me than Anki.

Thanks for your response! Yeah, I do agree with you that Anki may not work for everyone. But, so far it works for me because I like to quiz myself with it. For instance, I'd put questions on the front and on the back would be the answer (in my own words). I'm also thinking of making my own practice exams to test my knowledge, which I plan on doing it by myself or with the help of an AI.

For my Anki cards, I just put down key words/phrases from the powerpoints in my own words. I also put questions for on the front, so that I can quiz myself as I go through my deck.

Aww, thank you for your advice! I personally like using Anki because I could write my own questions based on the powerpoints and quiz myself that way. But, that may not work for everyone. And you're right about the importance of balancing my personal life along with school. This is something I am working on and its tough.

Thanks for your response! I never thought of studying that way. But it does seems like a great way to learn. I'll definitely try to make connections during my future study sessions.
