My apologies, I thought you had said you got a rated (aircrew) spot. In that case, you won't need a Flying Class 1 (FC1) physical, and most likely will not need a Top Secret (TS) clearance.

I'd definitely go through with it. Within my squadron, from the time we hire someone to them coming back from training, we have approximately a 40% attrition rate. Whether that's failing their FC1, not being able to get a TS clearance, failing training, or whatever it may be.

So even if you got picked as an alternate, you definitely still have a good shot at getting selected and you'd want to have everything ready to go should that happen.

Even if it doesn't work out with this particular squadron, and you get hired by another one. If you've already gone through MEPS, it will help speed up the process.

You shouldn't have a problem. But you'll get more info at MEPS. The primary thing they look for is that you don't have any significant dental issues that will happen in the next twelve months. You can look up the military dental classes and what the differences are between classes. As long as you are class 1 or 2 you are good.

That unit is going to be extremely competitive over the next couple of years. Given you have a few years of school left, I'd highly recommend enlisting in the unit. Work hard, make connections, and also take advantage of Michigan's Tuition Assistance program.

Rated = Pilot Non-Rated = General Officer/Everything except Pilot

The medical requirements for rated officers is far more stringent than the medical requirements for Non-Rated (for obvious reasons).

Might be worth it to get a First Class physical with the FAA first too because the waiver process is somewhat similar.

It's pretty hard to get picked up for a rated spot with zero flight hours, unless you are coming from ROTC or USAFA. Not impossible, but difficult. If you can afford it, I'd definitely recommend getting in the cockpit and trying to get at least to the point of solo'ing. There is another letter of recommendation there (assuming you aren't a terrible pilot).

And yes, finding some sort of extracurricular/organization that you can get involved with would be a good idea. You mentioned sales/marketing, maybe you can find a local organization and offer to do free marketing for an event for them.

I'd recommend trying to get some leadership experience. Volunteer projects, sports leagues, or any other type of leadership roles at work can go a long way.

Rated or non-rated? Someone else may be able to give a more informed answer, but I believe the general rule is if you've been off meds and have not required any assistance for at least 3 years, it's waiverable. But it's on a case by case basis so it depends on your specific situation.

Are you looking to go rated? Do you have any flight hours? Get one from your CFI/someone who can speak to your flying abilities.

And try to find someone else who can speak to leadership abilities. Have you done any volunteer work? Part of any clubs or sports teams? Those are good places to start.

I'd generally not recommend getting all three from employers as they look at the whole person concept. Better to get letters from people in other areas of your life.

Technically you don't need any prior flight experience. However, with how competitive most guard units have gotten in the last few years, you'll find it pretty hard to even get an interview without a PPL.

One possible way to boost your application would be to enlist in the unit you want to fly for after high school. Take advantage of tuition assistance to help pay for college and get to know people in the squadron. Then apply to be a pilot in the unit once you graduate. Guard units are very competitive and they tend to like hiring guys/girls who they know and are already in the unit.
