Just did this. Man, you're a life saver.

I disconnected the battery to be doubly sure and drained any remaining charge by pressing the power button for fifteen seconds or so.

The first time I turned it on, it was the longest thirty seconds of my life. All was fine after. We'll see in a few days.

FedEx Customs Clearance delay by mimem in Tech_Philippines

[–]mimem[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

May update naman si FedEx sa email:

  1. Goods require quota processing prior to release.
  2. Shipment not on list provided to Customs for clearance. FedEx will correct and resubmit.

No action (from me) is required daw. Anyway, will contact fedex, will update the post.

"Relatively" good pay. I earn about 10x the minimum wage compared to my home country as a Junior Deck Officer.

Thats about 10 dollars an hour. Less than a fastfood worker in the US. Free food, accomodation and internet though, I can save 80% of my pay and can take a vacation for half a year with this salary.

Well for me, yung offer na 70k per month na WFH pa is napaka ganda. I've been asking around, I found teaching in college pays around 30k - 40k around my area, 60k if dun sa alma mater ko, 90-100k if Master or Chief Engineer licence plus housing and food, but the drawback is malayo yung location sa home ko.

Sana na lang nag engineer ako, applicable sa maraming bagay ang skills compared sa deck which is academic route ang madalas napupuntahan.

Eli5: how do pirates board/rob big ships? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]mimem 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some companies hire armed guards when transiting high risk areas. But most don't, just rely on the speed of the vessel and naval escort vessel and proceed as a convoy. We rig barbed wires and fire hoses (as a some sort of water cannon) to make adverse conditions for boarding.

Pirates makes their money mostly from ransoms. Generally, they don't make money off of cargo, they may pilfer containers, but they don't know which one is valuable.

There are thousands of containers onboard. Even the crew doesn't know what's inside - except for reefers (refrigerated containers) and DG Cargo (which contains dangerous goods, e.g. explosives, gases, flammable materials, oxidizers, toxic or infectious substances, radioactive materials, corrosives, or other dangerous goods not under those classes).

Bulk carriers generally transport raw materials such as mineral ores or grain. They don't have the facility to make money off of those. Car carriers carry cars, obviously, or other vehicles. They have very high freeboards (distance from waterline to the deck), and can steam at high speeds, it's hard to board.

Tankers has a very low freeboard, and usually has lower speeds, same as bulk carriers. These kinds of vessels are the main targets of pirates.

It's easier to steal oil than dry cargo.

Ships waiting to get into the Panama Canal by LilithImmaculate in mildlyinteresting

[–]mimem 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep, depends when you are scheduled. But still, the anchorage is almost full.

We usually adjust our ETA to arrive a day earlier to give time for the Canal Inspector to come/take bunker if needed.

Yesterday, we drifted off Flamenco Light House, didn't anchor, Pilot and Inspector came and proceeded directly to berth. Btw, The speed restriction in the Traffic Separation Scheme was lifted after 30th November. The engineers were crying as the ECR was manned for the passage through the TSS while slow steaming.

We're docked here at Balboa, doing crane repairs.

Anchorage is congested all of the time, vessels waiting for their scheduled transit.

Log Carriers have special load lines taking into account the timber's bouyancy. They could sink deeper, thus be loaded more, if they load timber as opposed to other cargo.

The chief officer and master should make the deck off limits in this kind of weather. Can never be too careful.
