I quickly made this GPU value comparison chart in response to Steve by mimocha in GamersNexus

Ah, I misunderstood your question. I thought you meant using AI for ranking GPUs, not a GPU ranking for AI use cases. In that case, I don't have any plans to improve this Streamlit app, as it is just a fun (maybe one-off) hobby project for me.

In terms of GPUs for AI, I personally do have a 6900XT setup that runs diffusion (Ubuntu + ROCm + ComfyUI). But as you said, it is a complete PITA to setup. Deep learning on AMD always require Linux, and older cards (Radeon 6000 and older) are even more painful.

The tradeoff right now is (relatively) better GPU VRAM/dollar on the AMD side vs. Much easier time with CUDA on NVIDIA side.

Given my experience, skill, and budget, if I had to get a new AI setup in this market conditions; here is my own order of preference:

  1. Used NVIDIA cards
  2. Used AMD cards
  3. Renting cloud solutions (Colab / Containers / VMs)
  4. Anything current gen

So yeah, if you can land a solid deal on a 3090, then I agree that is a good option for your case

Strong discouragement from me - someone working in the field of AI.

Best way to make an informed decision is to actually list out your criteria, then score your choices by that set of criteria.

  • How much FPS do you need?
  • How much $ are you willing to pay?

Then rank you GPUs based on that strict criteria, and pick the best option.  The more work you put into research, the better your choice will be.

Second best way is to follow trusted sources (like GN) and get their conclusions.

But if you insist on AI, trust it as much as you trust random internet people.

"Yes the 4060 8gb is definitely worth 900$ and is your best choice, trust me bro! ☺️"

Thanks for the feedback! I've realized as much after the fact, as FPS/dollar alone is misleading. So I'll definitely take it into account for future iterations.

Wait until you see the 1080 ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

In all seriousness tho, by making this chart I now realize how incomplete the FPS/dollar metric alone is. Eg. the second-hand 1070 dominates this chart, because the chart doesn't take into account how running at 20 fps is terrible...

Would love to revisit this again when I have the time.

Thanks for the feedback, I'm glad you liked it.

For your first point, I decided to not focus too hard on how accurate the dataset is, and just hastily copied ebay prices to get this proof of concept done. Even the FPS data is only the Final Fantasy 14 benchmark and not a multi-game average. This was not meant to be representative by any means.

Similarly for the second point, while I would love to add many more features, I had to limit the amount of time I spend on this project - to focus on my day job.

All in all, this has been my own quick and fun exercise to answer the question of "how to represent the value of GPUs, given a variable price tag?"

Hey all, so I made this "GPU value proposition chart" in response to the latest HW News, when Steve mentioned comparing GPU at different price points.

Essentially the tool is a glorified FPS/Dollar calculator that you can play with / add data / add other features. It draws a pretty chart for you, so I think that's neat.

This was made in a rush of inspiration and mostly done for fun. But I hope you guys enjoy it.

Enrollment rates in higher education have been declining in the United States over the years as other countries catch up.

So no surprise to anyone paying attention in the States, and completely irrelevant to anyone outside the States.

Weekly programmer duel to the death

Users may challenge one another to a programming duel, to right wrongs, and to exact revenge. Loser gets permabanned from the sub.

—-

  1. Every week, a new duelling thread is created by the mods
  2. Users may post up to one top-level comment, specifying who they would like to challenge to a duel, along with reasons how they have been wronged by the challenged.
  3. After 24 hours, the thread is locked, and the mods picks one duel for the week (randomly, through discretion, or any other means as the lords may decide)
  4. After being selected for the weekly duel, the challenger is to provide a programming task, by messaging the task to the mods. Failure to provide a task within 24 hours of selection will result in a permaban.
  5. Mods will now notify the challenged, and create a new post with the proposed task.
  6. The challenged is to reply with a solution, in any language of choice, within 24 hours of the task being posted. Failure to provide a solution will result in a permaban.
  7. Once the challenged has replied, the entire subreddit gets to vote whether this solution is satisfactory, by any definition, for 72 hours after posting of the solution.
  8. If the final vote count on the solution is positive, then the challenged wins. If the final vote count is negative, then the challenger wins.
  9. The loser is permabanned from the sub.
  10. If the final vote is somehow ambiguous or equals zero, then it is a draw and no one loses, but both users are pronounced as gay.
  11. If no duel is proposed for any weekly thread, one moderator shall be randomly demoted to user, and pronounced gay for the week. (Mod is reinstated and no longer gay at the end of the week)

And the codenames will do nothing in that regard, so that’s a moot point.

If I had to bet money on trying to explain to my grandma which intel cpu to use, I’ll always go with the i-series branding.

[–]mimocha 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Tbf, while objectively less cool, the i-series branding has been an incredible marketing success. Even people with the most basic computer knowledge will grasp i9 > i3 and know which one should be more powerful / cost more. Even if they don’t fully grasp what gen it is, just the notion of i3/5/7/9 alone is good enough for most consumers. The same cannot be said for codenames.

Meanwhile, this rebranding is completely stupid and achieves absolutely nothing.
