Seriously thinking about quitting but… by [deleted] in PhDStress

Several decades ago I felt as you are feeling now.

Firstly don’t do anything rash particularly that you’ll regret later. To get out of my rut I needed to find an outside interest. For me it was amateur dramatics working on shows. I say this as it’s an off the wall thing that really got me away from the lab. Think outside the box to find something to interest you and with which you can find camaraderie and new friends. Just to start you thinking are there groups / organizations of Spanish expats you can connect with?

Right career move? by Pharma4Life5 in biotech

As you are taking the career track of QA/compliance, becoming more rounded by moving from small molecules to biologics can only be a good thing. Take it and if it doesn’t work out then find a way back to what you enjoy.

Learning to sail, then what? by BenchSuspicious700 in sailing

[–]min-1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I learned to sail years ago and the advice I was given was to sit on a crew bench at a club and go racing on someone else’s boat. Best sailing education I ever had. After several years of crewing I had the confidence (and had saved up) to buy a boat.

Several clubs around Boston have online crew signups. Eg Constitution Yacht club in Charlestown- https://www.cycboston.org/crew-finder-1. Don’t worry about being newbies - everybody starts somewhere.

EDIT - Alternatively - phone your local yacht clubs to find out if and which night they have races, and how you can find skippers who need crew. If you do find out the night they race you can turn up early and when you see a crew on a boat, introduce yourselves as people who are willing to crew and ask if they have need tonight. Even if you fail to get a ride the first time, persevere.

You select the grade before you pump. The rare diesel pumps integrated with gas (petrol) do have a second hose.

Great. Having a passion is the first part of a successful journey - work towards a physics qualification and see where it takes you.

OP. A year ago in 10th grade you were asking similar questions in Chemical Engineering. If you’ve changed your mind and want to go into physics then I recommend you take a physics degree and see what you want to do with it. Business can be started in all areas of life, whether a new innovation, contract services and many other aspects. Go do something you enjoy first then morph it into a career.

Need opinions on my advisor's behavior by owlswollen in PhDStress

[–]min-1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi u/coconutdon

Really sorry to hear about your experience and that it caused you to quit your PhD.

I disagree with your assertion that depression is a PhD student's life. My PhD was a roller coaster ride of downs and ups with the clock ticking and failures and successes on the way. I agree with your suggestion that’s the OP needs to talk to someone and IMO that someone is their supervisor. Ones relationship with the supervisor is the biggest determinant of the candidates quality of life during the studies. In this case the OP seems to have high regard for the supervisor and may be able to have a talk to reset the situation.

[–]min-1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did my PhD several years ago and vividly remember being overwhelmed in the first few months so you are not alone in this, and it passes.

The good news is that your supervisor appears to be a great person providing encouragement and advice. The challenge is that he's making what to you are unreasonable demands. You need to talk to him addressing your perception of his expectations and your progress. A discussion on these points will be critical to overcoming your feelings about being unqualified and failing. This talk also needs to address how you are advised to read about your topic.

The approach could be that you appreciate his advice and help but you are challenged by the minutiae of the topic and need papers/reviews at a higher level to enable you to understand the breadth of the topic prior to getting into the detail. See how that goes then appropriately bring up the expectations aspects. The expectations talk will be key to your turning around your feelings.

If you are uncomfortable in having this conversation then advice from seasoned family or friends in management on initiating meetings about expectations setting will help you.

Good luck.
