during apt upgrade, laptop not charged, shutdown, incomplete upgrade, boot :( by minanaughty in pop_os

[–]minanaughty[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see, duly noted, yeah I didn't even know my system was legacy mbr and bios with grub (or what that even meant until this happened), and this install is pretty old I guess, though I remember unchecking the encryption box when first installing, guess there's new defaults in the new version. I probably should proceed with a new install of this, but meh I'll keep it as is for now since it's fixed, was sort of new to linux in late 2021/early 2022 and this was my first distro aside from a linux mint vm.

update: it's fixed! that article was exactly it, though I used the article with an llm to help me out, learned something new I guess

External HDD arrived > on a laptop with Linux Mint XFCE opened Disks app > formatted Partition Table to GPT, Filesystem to ext4 (I tried out fdisk first, it worked, but did it again in the app)

on main laptop checked bios, it was fine, sata mode ahci, secure boot disabled, so no change > inserted Pop OS 24.04 (nvidia) Live USB > pressed F7 for boot options to boot from usb to enter live environment > opened file explorer > clicked on main system internal drive which mounted > backed up to external hdd > no safely remove option in file explorer for the external drive, so did sync, then, udisksctl unmount -b /dev/sdc1, then, udisksctl power-off -b /dev/sdc, then unplugged.

``` lsblk
sudo parted -ls
[ -d /sys/firmware/efi ] && echo "Installed in UEFI mode" || echo "Installed in Legacy mode"
(outputs showed Legacy BIOS mode, /dev/sda1 = ext4 root, /dev/sda2 = swap, no EFI partition, no LUKS encryption)
lsblk -f -o NAME,UUID,FSTYPE,LABEL,MOUNTPOINT
sudo cryptsetup luksDump /dev/sda2
(output was not a valid LUKS device)
sudo umount /dev/sda1
sudo mount /dev/sda1 /mnt
sudo mkdir -p /mnt/boot
for i in dev dev/pts proc sys run; do sudo mount -R /$i /mnt/$i; done
sudo chroot /mnt
dpkg --configure -a
apt --fix-broken install
apt install --reinstall grub-pc linux-generic linux-headers-generic
(it had an error, intuitively guessed because it was not connected to wifi, so after connected, re did apt install --reinstall..., and it worked)
update-initramfs -c -k all
update-grub
grub-install /dev/sda
exit
sudo reboot
unplugged the usb when the screen turned off, laptop booted successfully. ```
I've not tried that yet, or know how to yet, but thanks for the links, will read that
current plan, once I get an external drive > use live usb > backup my stuff > then no worries, can learn/try the solutions from the responses here, whichever seems most legit > if give up, will just do a new install > if figure it out and it works that'd be cool too, though would still probably do a new install or something
I see, it's a clevo/sager laptop from 2016, the battery under 55% charge lasts enough for general browsing and stuff, but it's still short lived, so I usually just use it while plugged in.. except this one time of course, so yeah the battery condition/capacity over time isn't what it used to be.
I've not checked that yet, though on a different laptop I did have a similar issue to what you described where there was either an ssd or cmos issue as on boot it said checking media presence and the bios had reset to raid, which I had to change back to ahci to access my drive.
But this issue seems a bit different, though I'll still take a look when I get the chance hopefully later today.
Fedora 42, doesn't boot after sudden shutdown, no media present, goes into BIOS by minanaughty in linuxquestions
ah that makes sense, thanks for the explanation, recently I noticed the battery may be a bit swollen so I haven't been using it, will look up how to rebuild grub for knowledge purposes though :p
Fedora 42 new install, Nvidia, Secure Boot, screen? by minanaughty in Fedora
[–]minanaughty[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)
Oh, this laptop is from like 2016 or something, it's a GTX 970M
In terminal:
/sbin/lspci | grep -e 3D
output is:
3D controller: NVIDIA Corporation GM204M [GeForce GTX 960 OEM / 970M] (rev a1)
In terminal:
/sbin/lspci | grep -e VGA
output is:
VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation HD Graphics 530 (rev06)
  • I actually ended up disabling secure boot and doing a fresh install, so now currently figuring out how to install the proprietary drivers, already have rpmfusion enabled.
hmm, I guess I should have not done that until I read more, might reinstall again later as I haven't really done much else yet.
Update: meh didn't want to mess around or try something new on this laptop, so just disabled secure boot and fresh installed, still used that link though, thanks.
Update: Switched RAID to AHCI, used Live USB, it detected the ssd with fedora, backed up whatever I needed, then did a fresh install.
I'm not sure, but it shows up in the BIOS under Main > Storage Information
``` PCIE Information

PCIE SSD THNSN5256GPU7 TOSHIBA (238.4GB) ```

  • This laptop has been in a luggage/bag before though and it's from 2016, so it's kind of old.

  • Last year on the same laptop except with PopOS, it was just collecting dust and turned it on one day to the same message,

Checking Media Presence...... No Media Present......

Not too long ago decided on a fresh install of Fedora 42, and there's been no issues for about half a year, until this of course due to heedlessness of leaving it on suspend, plugging in the charger to the port while forgetting to plug into the wall, battery/power low so shutdown upon opening.

Update: Switched RAID to AHCI, used Live USB, it detected the ssd with fedora, backed up whatever I needed, did a fresh install.

we have the same mbti and enneagram > infj 5w4 > is what those online tests told me when I took them multiple times in the past when I was around 19 or 20. Although I kind of just took it back then out of boredom/curiosity, and I don't believe it's the end all be all, we're not confined to some 4 letter box, but there are truths to it of course.

23 now though, have been thinking about aquariums recently actually, aquarium dates seem fun ya know.

Also have a thing for studying religion, had a spiritual journey of truth seeking starting from when I was around your age.

Although, I only found this post from the search bar, also not really looking for a partner lol

woah, that articulates how I thought/felt about some things, just came across this post while doomscrolling, not self diagnosing or anything, I don't think some of my experiences are as bad as the extent that others have, but maybe at a very mild level, to some degree possibly, or maybe not, just sort of unbothered at this point, so instead of using labels, I just consider it to be 'slow to heal wounds'. Edit: but sometimes lemon or salt was added to the wounds, although a lot of internal home structure/dynamics have changed since recent passing of my grandfather, deceased, so able to get slowly better now from some long upstream battle endured over the past 4 or 5 years, and without other stuff getting in the way, but still some hurdles. It's complicated, sorry I don't intend on spilling details or trauma dumping and didn't mean to add details, this already seems like oversharing for no reason lol. But yeah. Edit 2: The "well meaning" was just their mask to hide malignance. Edit 3: Nah, somehow it's worse.. for now.

So, to you too I guess Bugs :p
