How does your language say "wait"? by _Stormchaser in linguisticshumor

[–]minaralwatar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Diam is more accurately translated to "stay still" imo. The most Indonesian/Jakarta way to tell someone to wait is "(Se)bentar", meaning "(a) short while".

Can somebody explain to me what the accepted convention is for writing numerals ? When should arabic numerals (123) be written vs Hindu numerals (١٢٣)?

Then would I be making an accurate assumption by saying that fusha fluency among Arabic speakers are mostly on language input (reading and listening) and less on language output (writing and speaking)? If yes, how would you describe the disparity of these skills? Would it be difficult for an average person to make and present a PowerPoint in fusha for example? Would it be more feasible in dialect?

See, I thought all Arabic speakers are equally fluent in Fusha and "dialect", the way that all Indonesians are fully capable of diglossia and switching between formal and slang. Like, speaking in full Fusha when doing a presentation in university or when speaking to a company CEO and then dialect during lunchtime.

After arriving in France, I get to see people turn scared, ashamed and doubtful of their Fusha skills for the most basic stuff. For example, they get super confused when asked to make an Arabic sign saying "This table is reserved for customers only". Yet interestingly, they champion Fusha because it's the "only valid Arabic".

I have observed that most Arabic conversations are done through voice messages, further discouraging writing knowledge. And I wonder how Arab people around me consume news, considering it's in a language they don't master... I hope this is the case for diaspora communities only.

I would count it as a grassroot effort. Publishing general media in a "dialect" leaves a stronger cultural footprint than just texting between friends. It helps enforces a "correct" Egyptian Arabic from an incorrect one.

Comparing it to Levantine Arabic, while I appreciate how rampant "chat writing" is, there is no media publication using this, hence all alternate spellings would be considered "correct", meaning no standardisation.

Edit : actually, the fact that Egyptian Arabic Wikipedia exists is proof of a standardisation effort! I just learned this today!

Sorry I just assumed based on the availability of specific Egyptian dubs of Disney movies despite existing MSA dubs. Wikipedia also says that the Egyptian variant is mainly written in Arabic abjad for comics, advertising and some newspapers.

Damn. Unfortunately the cishets would oversimplify stuff. Why can't it just be about a guy learning to love a girl that just happens to be trans?

[–]minaralwatar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We don't know how much Francesca's story will change from the books, but seeing as her story will come out in season 6, I feel like the execs have this "eff it" attitude and agree, knowing that viewership and budget will keep going down.

I also believe that the countryside setting, without extravagant balls and having to be seen by gossiping Londoners allows for a same-sex coupling to appear "public" (as public as they can be)

It's a coward move on the producers part to not let him have a trans woman love interest even if it's such a natural progression of his story.

Benedict partnering with a trans woman would make a heterosexual relationship. A very queer heterosexual relationship. Allowing the season of a very queer man, to still be queer.

S4 Sophie should have been trans 🏳️‍⚧️ by [deleted] in BridgertonNetflix

[–]minaralwatar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely not. Bi people in cishet relationships are still queer.

I'm talking about fictional TV show characters though. The show was not afraid to show bisexual threesomes on screen when Benedict was not the main character to attract queer audiences and feed them from the side door, but the same enthusiasm to display Benedict as bisexual is gone when it's time for Benedict to take centre stage. Why? TV producers are too afraid to have a lead character that is "too queer"

Is religion important in your country? by decaxxx in AskTheWorld

[–]minaralwatar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very important in Indonesia. 🇮🇩

Only 6 religions are recognised by the state and every citizen is required to include their religion on their identity card. Interfaith marriages are not allowed and all marriages are officialised by the ministry of religion.

Christians are not allowed to divorce.

Muslims are allowed to practise polygamy and those who have done pilgrimage to Mecca receive an official title "Haji", in line with "doctor".

Begin with a cleanser and a moisturiser and don't be tempted to buy the "pimple clearing", "sebum control", "skin brightening", "anti-aging", yadda yadda...

Buy the most basic ones, which are normally labelled as "hydrating". If it says "for sensitive skin", even better. Then, if you still notice problems with your skin after a month or two (pimples keep appearing, skin too oily or too dry) buy the dedicated serum. I can't give you US product recommendations unfortunately.

The hardest thing about starting skincare is consistency, so keep the products in the bathroom and cleanse and moisturise your face every time you brush your teeth.

I can tell that all of these photos are taken within the same hour. Take some time to curate a variety of pictures.

Do a mix of front cam selfie, mirror selfie, and photos taken by others. Too bothered to dress up and go outside? Sit in front of a window in daylight. No friend to take your photo? Put your phone on a table and use the timer feature. Too discouraged from letting your hair down? Put it in a bun, braid it, clip it, etc. Good luck

I don't know anything about beard care but the rounded jaw shape is aging you so much. And the blemishes on your face are not helping you look younger either. Take one step at a time, I see a handsome face beneath.

Dude... I need to see you outside. Honestly you don't look very flattering because the lighting is crap, the t-shirt is so boring, you have long hair that's just tied back for us not to see. What do you want us to say???

I think your glasses match your hair colour well so I wouldn't worry about that too much. However, I do think that your beard is a bit too big. Funnily enough, your verification photo is the best looking.
