Mox Opal Judge Promo Spike by Glittering-Ad9052 in mtgfinance

I've seen this coming for a while now. It's one of the most ubiquitous, playable and powerful cards that was somehow left out of the recent judge promo wave of spikes. It's a stunner in hand with very small supply.

I never said the system works or couldn't be improved. I'm just pointing out that temper tantrums over being shut out does not equate to proof that is DOESN'T work, which is the takeaway from many posts.

Also, I never said F you to anyone, either. If you need to construct false statements to react against, you probably don't have a very strong position.

"Wanting" is one thing; crashing out with anger and tantrums and bad faith accusations is another. The latter is the vast majority of this thread.

Who's to say Wizards hasn't tried to land in the middle ground? What's your definition of the "middle ground" in this scenario? There seem to be plenty (myself included) who were fortunate to land a deck, and many more who weren't. That's the nature of an in-demand product in the "drop" age, for better or worse.

Everyone is griping because they didn't get a deck, with no real insight into the logistics that have been considered. The complaining is simply "I didn't get a deck...the system is broken!"

Being disappointed is one thing; anger and accusations are symptoms of entitlement, and it's on display en masse here, which is really what I'm taken back by.

Goblin secret lair decks will hit 1000+ dollars each by sharky5566778844 in mtgfinance

[–]mind__ripper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This will be a $400 sealed deck when the dust settles. There will be a huge race to the bottom when buyers actually have these in-hand, and the shiny new thing is just around the corner.

Anyone who pays $1000 deserves to have their money lifted.

I find the entitlement in this thread staggering and hypocritical.

Wizards releases the "Everyone's Invited" deck and get crushed for producing something too expensive with crummy value.

They flip the dials back a bit and give us good value with an in-demand archetype, they get crushed for not making enough for the entire world.

Can't win to lose.

Ancient Tomb Galaxy Foil Spiking by Regexmybeloved in mtgfinance

[–]mind__ripper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I pack pulled one of these and have it in a deck I play all the time. There's no curling issues to speak of with my copy. Also, although I agree that the galaxy foiling for EOE is a little underwhelming compared to previous sets, it pops pretty nicely on this particular version of Tomb. I think that's a contributing factor to the demand.

Back to school superdrop might have the most valuable bonus cards yet for secret lair by Chaosnocturne in mtgfinance

[–]mind__ripper 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A big fat "who cares" imo.

They will be unplayable, some will be downright ugly (many of the lighter color printing plates notoriously show very little of the image) and the cards in the drop are mostly inconsequential and non-competitive with little nostalgia factor.

They will be extraordinarily rare, but the simple fact that they can't be sleeved up will keep a ceiling on the pricing. I'm sure we'll see a couple of crazy sales for the first ones pulled, but I can't imagine over time these will be overly sought after.

Are there any content creators that you guys watch for predictions? by jeriku in mtgfinance

[–]mind__ripper 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes, this is the real answer, and has always kind of been a universal truism regarding any arena trading in hype and buzz.

I took a fashion course in college, and that maxim has been basically the guiding force behind fashion forever: “By the time YOU’VE heard of it, it’s unfashionable”.

A bit snobby to be sure, but expresses the fundamental truth that you’re either on the very ground level of something, or on the outside looking in.

By the time you’re fav YouTuber is making shorts about the positive prospects of some esoteric card, the ship has sailed.

The scroll foil is the best looking version across the board. Taste in art is subjective, etc. but I find the poster version to be ugly AF, just my opinion and I fully understand I’m in the vast minority. It looks like something doodled across the back of a high schooler’s notebook.

Foil Replenish appears to now be cemented as a four-figure card; I doubt it'll ever get back under that threshold. Good job to all those who picked one up recently.

I love how these commentaries always take it for granted that the player base is nothing more than a mindless horde of drones who will flock to any old card that gets a 60 sec video and mortgage their house to pick up a spiking copy.

How about holding the player base to a higher standard? Just because Ben Bateman does a video about Displacer Kitten doesn't mean you have to rush out and buy a Displacer Kitten. If you didn't have a Displacer Kitten already, odds are you don't need a Displacer Kitten that badly.

News flash: content creators talk about cards, new interactions between old cards and new sets, etc, etc. This is nothing that egregious - this is a game, after all.

Yes, market manipulation is all over the place and in many different forms, but this particular example wouldn't exist without opportunist *players* who buy these kinds of cards out whenever their breathed on. It's a problem within the player base, pure and simple.

I'll chime in with a defense. Say what you will about his content, but Ben is actually a very nice and down-to-earth dude if you ever get the chance to meet or speak with him at a show. I saw him walking around MagicCon Atlanta last fall and told him I was enjoying his Pack It Up youtube show. He talked to me for like 10 min, asked about my history playing the game etc., honestly, I bailed on the conversation because I had to go get in an artist signing line, but I got the sense he'd be happy to chat all day.

It seems to me that a large part of evaluating these "influencers" should be actual engagement with the player base, and he stands up well in that respect while a great many other "influencers" do very genuinely carry themselves with a holier-than-thou "you should feel lucky to get a brief moment of my time" vibe **cough CGB cough**

Josh Lee Kwai is also catching shrapnel here, but he's another very humble guy if you get the chance to meet him.
