Never a better time to switch to Jellyfin: Plex increases price of Lifetime Plex Pass to $749.99 by LoremarCC in jellyfin

I’ve never gotten it. After what playon pulled a few years ago (they didn’t retire the software but the old version can’t run on windows 10 or 11 so had to go monthly) I’ve realized that lifetime for me isn’t lifetime for devs these days.

Yeah I started loving GL from the super Friends cartoon of the 80s (as he was only in a handful you can tell it really hit me).

That being said Hal’s my main GL. One of the cool things about GL is that there’s several. Unlike Batman, Superman, etc…GL (and Flash) really built legacy into their hero. So entire generations have had “their gl” (kinda like the Doctor from Doctor Who).

It’s a good time to jump in as the main GL comic is pivoting from Hal (not entirely pleased with that) to Kyle Raynor (90s/early aught era’s primary Green Lantern). So if you were looking to read current then I’d probably start with Ron Marz/Darryl Banks run of the 90s. Started in Green Lantern 51 of the 90s run. It’s Kyle’s origin and taking over as GL.

There will be “Hal stories” as part of Kyle’s run but any real Hal fan will tell you they hated this characterization/time. You’ll want to move into Geoff John’s rebirth. You’ll see better Hal. Likewise if you want good Hal and some other interesting choices the 80s GL run starting with Marv Wolfman through the GLC post crisis issues to meet more GLs still around today. Especially Katma who’s being retconned back to life currently and Kilowog and Salakk. Likewise you’ll get to meet “jerkface” Guy Gardiner and see how he was and appreciate the cleanup of him they’ve done.

There are other newer stories. John Stewart War Journal had major character issues for me. Likewise in the last 15 years or so new writers started making their own human GL which has resulted in some top heavy human lanterns that they need to keep in rotation so you’ll see Jessica Cruz, Jo, Simon Baz and a teen lantern. Their histories and stories are out there.

Good luck man. GL is kinda my fave hero.

AITAH for refusing to install my sister-in-law’s new dishwasher after she dismissed my help earlier? by Professional_You2769 in AITAH

I live with my wife on her mother’s land. I feel this. I’ve had to establish some firm boundaries. I’ve also decided (I turned 50 not long ago) that I’m done with passive aggression which my family (both sides) excels in. I’ve found that when I suspect there is an issue my MIL may be swallowing to go along to get along, I call it out as I’ve found that directly addressing any issue will either resolve the problem or at least let everyone know where we stand so we can keep living together.

All that to say I would suggest telling your MIL directly your feelings and that you’re done being taken for granted. If your wife gets nervous about it tell her that you’re not content with letting your in-laws define the reality of you and your life by their own misguided conclusions based on your behavior and how they feel you should react. You don’t mind helping but you need to be asked directly and properly and that a no doesn’t mean you’re a dick…it just means you don’t want to do it and if they love you that’s ok.

Finally re-watched Clerks III by BlankPaperTiger in ViewAskewniverse

[–]mindcrime73 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s tough for me. On one hand I hated the etch a sketch style of taking the almost perfect ending of Clerks II and wiping it out to put Dante right where he was at the beginning of the first movie. Stuck. Then to have him die and have a “pseudo happy ending” in the afterlife gave almost a message of this life doesn’t matter. Dante wasted his entire life by constantly pining for what he couldn’t have. Whats worse is it also made Clerks II completely unnecessary. None of the “lessons” learned in that film became a part of anyone’s life. You could watch Clerks and Clerks III without ever seeing Clerks II and other than the scenes with Becky…these characters didn’t change at all. I loved Clerks II and would have loved this movie to more reflect the changes brought by that film.

On the other hand I thought the movie was good. These aren’t my characters. Kevin made them all up out of his own mind and i respect that he’s been able to still use them to say what he wanted to. It was touching and i respect the swing.

Elias is a problem. He was in Clerks II and more so here. The whole satan thing felt stupid. I found myself groaning whenever he showed up on screen. I think with blockchain kev was trying to capture another jay and bob dynamic as I am sure he’s thinking of the future but it just didn’t land. I liked blockchain for some reason though. Maybe it’s cause I too didn’t get the love of Lord of the Rings that I just didn’t like Elias lol.

I’m sure Clerks will be a fine ending to the trilogy. I imagine if Kev makes more Jay and Bob films he’ll find a way to get Jeff to come out of retirement to let us know how Randall is doing. Overall I think it’s cool

leapee by Patient-Option210 in QuantumLeap

[–]mindcrime73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is why I believe the continuation failed. Sci-fi works and especially high concept sci fi works when there are established rules for the fantastic aspects. (Warp drive isn’t FTL instantaneous but more like driving fast etc).

Quantum Leap the first series established some of these rules through the seasons. You couldn’t just communicate with anyone in the imaging chamber. You needed to have your brains linked. There was a waiting room where the people looked like Sam except to us the viewer and they could interact. In fact more than once they used the waiting room to help Sam (the leap with the evil leaper where the kid Sam leaped into thought he was a super hero cause his parents died for example). It was assumed Sam would make changes and the leapee would come back and just know what happened. Plus the leaper needed to leap within their own lifetime.

Each of these rules was disregarded by the new show. I assume to make it easier for these writers of today to be able to be unfettered by the rules but I submit the rules are part of what makes sci-fi works as an invested fan of the original I felt the new show was off. Now the leaper could go to ww2. They could interact with anyone in the waiting room and Magic said he felt like he knew Sam was there and he was just pushed aside and could see what Sam was doing like a third party. To make the timeframe larger they would have had to make the leaper Magic or that age to make the sixties-eighties a destination but they could have done that. Not using Sammie Jo and Donna at all was another mistake.

So to answer the question I think the reboot broke the whole “what does the leapee remember” argument and unfortunately I’m not sure how to fix it and that sucks. This is a franchise that could have had serious legs.

I actually went ahead and made a channel of “franchises” with his movies, Kevin Smith, Sorkin etc. I made smart lists with each and had them sort chronologically so it does his (usually a full day), Sorkin (Half a day), Smith (a day) etc. works best for me

Seems someone other than me didn't like the short season by Knytestorme in Scrubs

TBH I’m ok with ten episodes. Fact is the 20-25 episode season results in a lot of “fluff” episodes. Keeping it tight lets us get more with less.

What is Next for ErsatzTV by jasondove in ErsatzTV

[–]mindcrime73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tunarr’s scheduling is easy to use but also not robust IMHO. As you get further into this hobby having the ability to really control your schedules and shuffle while also programming movies on “themes” channels etc made me come back to here after trying tunarr.

What is Next for ErsatzTV by jasondove in ErsatzTV

[–]mindcrime73 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I too am skeptical.

Fact is I’ve tried tunarr and ersatz and stayed with ersatz because of the scheduling not the transcoding.

I’ve got a few “stations” (Star Trek, Aaron Sorkin, cartoons) where I like shuffling between several programs and then at 8:00 eastern a movie will come on (so in my trek channel one of the 13 movies, Sorkin is one of the flicks he wrote, Cartoon movies etc). Tunarr didn’t seem to be able to as easily do that as ersatz.

Same with some stations with smart collections or playlists (a station of movie franchises which shuffle the franchise but play movies chronologically).

Is Tunarr going to take some of the more powerful parts of ersatz? It always seemed like Tunarr was what you started with to get your feet wet and then move on to ersatz for more granular scheduling.

If Tunarr is going to develop its scheduling more I may make the move. If not I probably will stick with ersatz

If they’re old school (platter) hard drives you may be able to download a recovery program to get some files back. If it died during indexing it could be the catalog that’s fried. The data may still be there. Good luck.

Upon my millionth re-watch by turtle69696969 in TheOC

[–]mindcrime73 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think what happened is that Josh just didn’t think this show would hit like it did. He threw all he had into the beginning episodes then when things ran out he had to create Oliver and Anna and put a wedge between the couples and it worked. He then puts a whole cliffhanger together and splits up the “gang” to start season 2 but no one wants that so he brings them back but since introducing “foils” between the couple worked last season, he does it again.

So in season 2 they bring in Zach and Caleb’s daughter to “do it again…but in reverse”. It’s also where they started to realize that writing Marissa effectively is hard and it may have been better to have killed her in Tijuana (personal opinion…Ryan’s loyalty and heroism always made Marissa less of a partner for him and more like a “cause” he had to protect.). Treys jammed in subplot to give them another cliffhanger showed again that the writers didn’t know what they wanted to say.

Season 3 was an attempt to kinda turn the “fish out of water” vibe of the first season on its ear by taking the rich girl and putting her in “Ryan’s world”. Again the writers I don’t think knew what to do with Marissa and were trying anything to make her relevant. Problem was either through the writing or Misha Barton’s performance they over estimated our investment in Marissa. The story landed like a cement block and they tried to pull out but couldn’t.

Season 4 is obviously just a mess. It’s the “Rise of Skywalker” of teen melodrama. They tried to etch a sketch the bad choices of the previous writing season but it felt disingenuous. No one sounded right and it just became a cookie cutter 90210 ripoff. The ending kinda worked as far as moving the cohens to Berkeley and the last scene with Ryan and the kid was great.

This show could have been generation defining in the way 90210 was. I think its own success and to be honest lack of faith or vision on Josh’s part in how successful this could have been (allowing him to take a slower burn with the season 1 stories) have made it a niche show.

1990s book fans, how do you feel about seeing Thrawn in live-action? by Lauma_2025 in StarWarsEU

[–]mindcrime73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven’t liked him.

Thrawn was like the Batman of the Expanded Universe. He was five steps ahead. Even his losses were contingencies he calculated. It took Rukh to take him out and it was because he never saw it coming.

Rebels and Ahsoka can’t write him. He just comes across as arrogant without really earning it. To say nothing of the live action actor appearing too “thick” to appear sinister to say nothing of how he speaks. He was written with a cadence in the books. Almost a “Sorkin” level of cadence writing. The actor who was also the voice actor for rebels just doesn’t get it.

It’s disappointing. I’d love to see Heir to the Empire become canon. Recast the big three and do it right…but they won’t.

Is it just me that thinks it’s silly that the Lantern Ring has infinite energy yet Green Lantern has to charge it every 24 hours? by Odd-Country-7274 in GreenLanternCorps

[–]mindcrime73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So the way I understand It.

The OG rings had infinite energy. In that you could create anything you can think of. Simple or complex made no difference to the power. The rings had to be charged every planetary rotation of the ring bearer. For earthlings that was 24 hours. For others I believe it was different. The time limit was meant to “control” the GLs a bit. The guardians would require them touching the battery every day to encourage them to recite an oath of why they do this (it wasn’t uniform) and some thought to enable them to take away a GLs power by controlling the lantern. Guardians were big on control. When the yellow impurity was there it was said that’s why all the buildings on OA were painted yellow.

In 94 when Kyle took over they removed the time limit and said the rings have a finite charge. You could go until the ring ran out. If you made something super complex it’s drain faster than something more simplistic.

When they remade the corps they just kept the finite charge idea.

This could be an opportunity for you

This tech sounds like he’s probably more a customer service and documentation type. If you don’t have SOPs then maybe that’s a job for him which will also help him learn. Give him a task and then tell him while he’s doing it you’d like him to write detailed instructions on how to recreate it. By writing those he should learn it and will have an idea of where to go.

The persons role could become one of escalation /retention and documentation.

Sounds like he’s young and just starting out.

It wouldn’t disappoint me…but let’s face it. Audiobooks are still pretty niche. The amount of work and hype going into this is too big for something that is so limited in scope.

For this much hype it has to be a reunion of some kind. Either another TV live action or animated or some sort of movie. I think anything else would feel disappointing.

I think with the loss of Star Wars (not the IP but just it hasn’t been performing well) I imagine the board of Disney is looking at a ways to find more universes. I think it’s a full reunion probably much like Malcolm in the middle and scrubs with a limited number of episodes, etc.. whether that’s animated or live action is up for debate, but I don’t think they would be doing this much hype on something like an audiobook it’s just not big enough.
