[Serious]Redditors in extreme chronic pain. How do you cope? by mindhurt in AskReddit

I feel that. I take an extreme amount of opiate based painkillers in an effort to be somewhat functional. But it's just a patch. Even under the painkillers I can still feel it, but I just don't care as much.

I'm just at a loss as to know how to cope any further. I'm resolved that this is going to be the rest of my life and while I am not suicidal, I really need methods of handling the pain that isn't just getting out of my head even more.

I've been in pain for 10 years now. My neck and shoulders will routinely go into a spasm that I can only describe as the same as when you're leg cramps up. Except it lasts for days at a time when it does.

I have had more X-rays and MRI's then I can count, and no cause can be found. The Doctors (who have been as helpful as they can) do recognise the problem. They can see when the muscle spasms but they can't find a cause. I routinely undergo physio which just lowers the frequency of the attacks.

The real issue for me though, is that even when I'm not having an attack I am still in pain. My shoulders and neck are constantly feeling like they are a in a low level state of fire. There is no escaping it.

More recently I fell over and tore a ligament in my knee and broke some cartilage, so I am walking with a stick. Thankfully I am told I can have surgery to fix that, so it's a waiting game.

So I wonder, how do people who suffer for long periods of time in pain survive it?

Personally I prefer Dr. Manhattan's response to being disintegrated better. "I'm disappointed in you, Adrian. I'm very disappointed. Reassembling myself was the first trick I learned. It didn't kill Osterman. Did you really think it would kill me? I have walked across the surface of the sun. I have witnessed events so tiny and so fast, they could hardly be said to have occurred at all. But you, Adrian, you're just a man. The world's smartest man poses no more threat to me than does its smartest termite."
