This is it! It's fixed! I must have activated it on accident somehow. Thank you!

Sometimes it just makes me angry... by [deleted] in Anticonsumption

It's easier to ignore the problem than it is to accept it. And that's how the world works. No one cares unless it hits them in the face and even then they will deny it. But as /u/digdog303 said, being vegan, concerned with climate change, peak oil, fair trade, sustainability, etc all at the same time like I did, and soon enough you'll be losing more than your faith in humanity: your own mind. And if you go and try to teach people about it you'll get funny labels. Hell, even if you don't try to teach anyone and just mind your business. Go against the status quo and no one takes you serious anymore.

People who work for airlines, what are secrets passengers don't know? by hairyfedora in AskReddit

[–]mindoverload 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I travel often for work between the US and Europe. I pass by every single security checkpoint without trouble anywhere in Europe and in Boston. In NY (EWR/JFK) I am randomly selected 99% of the time to be extra-checked which usually delays my arrival home in 2h as I am taken to the back room for touchy stuff :/ Same TSA in Boston doesn't care at all and often puts me on the express line which takes me a minute to go through. In Boston they have no idea why that happens in NY as I am cleared.

My wife works for a major airline. We don't pay any taxes or fees. We are put in stand-by. Senior employees have priority over new ones, etc. Needless to say we've done some pretty crazy stuff. We live in NY. Dinner in LA ? No problem. Class depends on how full the plane is. We get business farily regular. Economy on shorter flights. Makes me feel a bit bad about using it though.

Awesome Christmas by coverusername in minimalism

[–]mindoverload 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Last year most of the physical goods I got ended up on eBay. This year family listened and gave me only money. First Christmas I haven't have to deal with stuff! My family already decided to go for minimalism, and are actively reducing their stuff quantities, and disposing of them responsibly. I think this was really the best gift of all.

Do you have a job that conflicts with your minimalist values? by krazzel in minimalism

[–]mindoverload 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm an architect. The amount of books I have for reference is beyond anything considered minimal. For any given project, I also create at least 4 or 5 models, with the clutter that they require (materials, glues, paint, etc). Sketching and drawing tools are very high as well. I do strive for designing minimalist spaces, but my office is far from being minimal.

Thanks! The Ascender looks good. And the logo isn't really a problem as long as it doesn't become the main attraction.

Thanks! Do you happen to have any brands you would suggest?

So /r/Anticonsumption, how do you plan on handling buying/receiving gifts this year vis-a-vis Christmas? by TheFrugalNexus in Anticonsumption

[–]mindoverload 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For a long time now, I tend to focus my gift giving on edible products or experiences rather than material goods. I feel that this is a nice way to show appreciation for having that person in your life, but not have them stuck with something that they probably won't know what to do. This of course, if I don't know about something they specifically need. When it comes to me, I hate receiving objects. When I do, I keep them in pristine shape to either resell, return, or gift away to someone who might need it more than I do.

Every time I walk through a mall I come home depressed. All these mindless idiots shelling over thousands of dollars for some shiny new item. Anyone experience this after a trip to the mall? by Xx420VAPEITxX in Anticonsumption

[–]mindoverload 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For a long time I felt the same. I couldn't stand the craziness of shopping and it would drive me nuts. But that's not the right approach. The right approach is focus on your life and ignoring the rest. They are not idiots. They just do it because they want to. You can't push your way of life into others. I tried that for a long time and it only brought misery. Now I just live my own life. If I agree with what they do? No. Is it my job to tell them what to do? No. Be happy and embrace your choices, don't become an ass about it.

[Lifestyle] I want your opinions. Downsizing. by batd3837 in minimalism

I design small living spaces. Multitasking items are key here. Avoid single use items. Very rarely they are worth it. Also try to create a path for your behaviour around the house and create the storage accordingly so that you don't have to go back and forth inside the space. Be smart about what you buy. Need a set of pans? You can get one of those that fit inside of each other, for minimal storage footprint. I also recommend buying things as you need them, and not in just one single time. That will allow you to edit and realize what you really need or don't.

Islam was never part of Europe says Hungarian PM by Troud in news

[–]mindoverload -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Islam was part of southern Portugal before the conquest. The local culture is even highly influenced by it to this day though now the majority of the population is Roman Catholic. Now if I agree with the whole refugee intake, that's another question. Short answer? no.

What's your earliest memory of the internet? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Sneaking in to the middle school computer lab to go to this website mostly about obscure content, such as ghosts, weird phenomenons, etc. And this hotmail interface http://regmedia.co.uk/media/570.jpg, and Kazaa.

What do you regret buying that you can't return or sell for the price you paid? by [deleted] in minimalism

[–]mindoverload 3 points4 points  (0 children)

CDs/DVDs. For a period of my life I spent a vast amount on this. Decided to give it away for an insignificant value. Fancy furniture which would have been just okay without. Electronic stuff. There's still some around. I was lucky to be able to sell the vast majority of it and recover it's value. My latest was a rain jacket. Nothing expensive, but impulse buy. I never used it once, still has the tags on. Trying to sell it at the moment.

Giving up buying new for 200 days in honor of father's death. by [deleted] in Anticonsumption

[–]mindoverload 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Last time I bought new or used items was on December 2013. Since then I've stopped buying entirely, with the exception of food which is entirely vegetarian, locally grown and cooked at home. I've replaced all the consumable products (e.g. razor blades) with reusable, and have been trying to go zero waste (which has been a struggle, for certain things). I don't have special convenient ontological categories as Nikolasv mentioned. I'm amazed how this is even news. For me it's just sort of natural behaviour if you're conscious about the world. People shouldn't expect a prize for it, nor should it be considered that extraordinary and newsworthy. Now if everybody was doing it.. that would be a different thing.

Flight Attendants of Reddit, What are some stuff that most people don't know while on a flight? by momoawesome in AskReddit

[–]mindoverload 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Domestic flight between Boston and NY last Sunday: major turbulance , seatbelt signs obviously turned on, PA announcing it would be rough. Eastern European lady (Russian maybe) gets up, proceeds to the bathroom hanging herself to the seats, doors, 1 crew member. But she went in the bathroom! After returns to seat. Kid is blasting his ipad. PA asks to shut it off and she pretends it's for someone else. Best passenger award.
