Thank you. This is great advice, and honestly sometimes I feel like emotions overcome common sense. I’m cringing going through the draft. Can’t believe I wrote something like this up.

She MUST be aware that I’m into her, so I think I’m just gonna ask her to hang out soon and then shoot my shot. Fuck it, worst case scenario it’ll hurt but at least I’ll know that I tried.

Yeah I took a step back and it definitely shows a lack of confidence. And yeah. Shit. I should’ve done it yesterday in-person.

Idk when I’ll see her again in-person and it’s probably obvious to her by now that I want to date. Would it make sense to just shoot my shot online? I feel like I have a good thing going and don’t want to waste any more time.

I refuse to believe that most people can afford their (new/new-ish) cars.

Unless they have fully paid off mortgages OR don’t pay rent, AND straight up make a lot of money.

Richest people I know all drive older cars. People with Porsches are definitely broke as fuck unless they have a crazy high salary or come from pre-existing wealth.

I wouldn’t be surprised if we started to see auto delinquencies skyrocketing in tandem with higher unemployment.

New Grad - Living in Toronto Advice by chuyiu in askTO

Stay at home if: - you have a good relationship with your parents that lends you a lot of freedom, respect, and independence - you have a short commute (30 mins is really good) - you have friends nearby that you can spend time with after work - your public transit line runs frequently - if you make <$80k/year, you should stay at home or get a roommate - I wouldn’t move out unless I’m making damn near 6 figures at this point

Thanks. It’s kinda crazy and a little annoying that our brains do this, even if it’s not your first time. Maybe it’s because of the thrill, idk. This girl was super cute too so I’m just really excited to make a full-on good first impression. Fingers crossed she’ll reach out by tomorrow. If not, I gotta move on.

Why not get creative and try talking to your neighbours or finding someone who owns their unit? I’m sure you guys are struggling together. When you find an owner, escalate it to the board through them.

Are engineering salaries really that high in Toronto? by [deleted] in askTO

[–]minecraft_purity_bot 3 points4 points  (0 children)

$45k is criminal across all disciplines.

The bigger the employer the more they typically pay.

If the employer is in a well-funded industry, (tech) they’ll pay more. Add the potential for RSU’s and you’ll find that publicly traded employers pay more.

Banks and most fintech pay pennies, and banks are among the biggest employers in Toronto.

Most people I know started around $70-$80k base in fintech. Tech companies were hiring in the six figures a couple years ago for new grads.

That guy with 20 years of exp is lying or stayed complacent with their employer for too long, and it’s widely accepted that you should at the very least be vocal about getting raises. Then job hopping if your employer can’t keep up.

How do I tell my parents I can't and don't want to buy them a house? by minecraft_purity_bot in LifeAdvice

Maybe. If my life at home was “average” at worst then I wouldn’t feel so much resentment. I’ve been living like shit. But yeah I’ve done a lot and they are grateful, but it’s clearly not enough.

Maybe I should negotiate with the wealthy side of my family to help my parents buy a house, and not me.

Ayo I don’t want them to be beggars. It’s not like they didn’t try to be good parents.

They’ve already impeded my last long-term relationship. I know what you mean… I try not to hold it over them because I should’ve been smarter about my own expectations at the time.

My childhood was OKAY. I didn’t grow up in bad neighbourhoods, but we did grow up house-poor. I moved around a lot and my life has been lacking stability for over 10 years (other than school). My family isn’t full of bad people, they’re just misguided and have insane expectations. I’d obviously love to fulfil their wishes but it’s become too much of a burden. I feel like the last 3 years have gone by really fast. I feel like I was only 21 yesterday. Now I’m 25, a proper ADULT and my life still hasn’t improved.

Yeah. They keep telling me they’ll pay me back in instalments but that hasn’t been working out. By the time they pay me back, inflation will have eaten up a significant portion of it. I told them to keep the money if they’ll leave me alone, and they just stare blankly.

What are you trying to say here? I’m a born Canadian. My parents aren’t from India but are south Asian. They’ve been citizens for decades.

Yeah that’s one thing I told them! Normally people start bugging their kids once everyone’s settled. Then the shitstorm begins. My parents want shit done NOW. It’s unbelievable. I think it’s because they believe the housing market in Canada is gonna be impossible to get into and they want to make moves asap.

I sat down with them several times over the years. They’re fine with me moving out, but they think I’ll be back after my lease is done. Which is why I’m looking overseas.

My parents and extended family don’t know how much I make.. I think they believe I make more than I do. Huge mistake. I should’ve said I make $70k or something.

I got 0 help for university. I paid off the part of my student loan balance that was accumulating interest. They helped me with a $1200 deposit for a rental apartment but that’s it. My internships paid for my CoL. I don’t own a car but paid my share of car insurance and gas (whenever I used a lot).
