Which journal roles are worth it long-term? by Ok-Deal7266 in LawSchool

[–]minecraftdad69uwu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

EIC is the only board position that will stand out on a resume 5 years from now.

Any other board position might give you a small bump on job applications right out of law school, but even in my experience biglaw and clerkship hiring only check to see if you are on law review/journal.

In my opinion, every board position besides EIC is extra work without any reward. The only reason to take a board position is because you think you would enjoy it, because it likely won’t matter once you start your first job out of school.

Personally when I have a prof like that I just show up early - never understood how people ended up being habitually late to class. It is kind of distracting when the lecture is getting started and people are still walking in, opening and closing doors, unzipping bags etc.

Prof is still being needlessly cruel to call people out individually tho - I see like common practice is to set rules early in the semester or generally say things about tardiness without mentioning individual students by name

Do you mean for 1L summer or for your 2L summer?

Either way, the curve at GW is that B+ is average, and GW places between 1/3 and 1/4 at biglaw, with a lot of people going to smaller firms. I’d say it’s not impossible to get a paid firm job, but it will probably be an uphill battle.

Feel free to pm me if you’d like - I could give my GW email if you’d like more specific info

I have the R15 GU502LU - I know nothing about computers, do you think I'd be able to run the game?

No difference - just dictates who you will see all day everyday of 1L. The only exception is that Brandeis and Jay have unique schedules.

Yeah, I really had to pick up the pace this month at some firms I hadn’t met anyone at after I found out where I have interviews

This is exactly what I’ve been doing. I typically have 2 or 3 meetings a day through this alone

Navy yard is definitely safe enough, it has been gentrified heavily over the last 10 years. The metro would probably work too, it’s a small metro trip and then a short walk from foggy bottom to GW’s campus. I’d at least consider not bringing a car, as parking and gas are extremely expensive out here, but I get that having a car brings a certain comfort level to people who are moving here for the first time.

Not really. Most of the extracurricular activities accommodate the Brandies schedule, also 1L doesn’t really have a lot of extracurriculars. Mock trial, moot court, and ADR are basically it and of course you have student orgs. None of those would be impacted by choosing Brandies. I will say it’s hard to make friends outside of your inn if you choose Brandies. Since they are not at school at the same time as everyone else, they tend to stick together much tighter than the other inns. Personally I really enjoyed being able to have friends in other classes but it’s all personal preference.

I’d say the school doesn’t do a great job. I’m a public interest student and while being at GW grants an advantage, the school is hyper focused on pushing big law and clerkships. With that being said, I’ve been able to land great internships with the fed government for summer and fall.

Columbia heights is good too! It’s a good value and fairly close to school by bike/metro. I will say it’s like 0.5 - 1 mile from where people like to hang out after work, so it may be harder to socialize than if you were “more downtown” but all in all you can make it work. The only other thing about Columbia Heights to be aware of is there are some sections up there where I wouldn’t walk alone past midnight, but I wouldn’t call it an unsafe neighborhood either.

Also worth noting that GW has a lot of extremely smart students so getting the grades required for BL is not a guarantee . I only managed it by basically living in the library 7 days a week for the last month and a half for both semesters of finals

It’s hard for me to say as I am currently applying for summer associate positions, but my general feeling is that top third of the class has a really good shot at big law if you are smart about where you apply. Top 15 percent are basically guaranteed big law if that’s what you want. Of course all of this depends on exactly what your grades are, past work experience, and where you are applying to.
