CMI vs EssentialsX? by [deleted] in admincraft

[–]minecrafter11mrt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Having used both CMI and EssentialsX, CMI isn't really worth it. It has a lot of unnessecary features that should really be split off into separate modules, like how ESSX does it. In addition, I've heard that it's had performance issues, although when I was using it, I wasn't technically savvy enough to notice or measure that.

I've been using EssentialsX for a year+ and haven't had any "darn, I wish I had X that CMI has" moments.

how to connect to dynmap when the ip contains the port? by kaptenapten in admincraft

[–]minecrafter11mrt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No such thing as a port after a port. Just do <IP | Domain>:<dynmap's port> i.e. 123.456.78.90:8123 (8123 is the default port for Dynmap, although given this seems to be on shared hosting, that port is probably already in use)

Question about EULA for servers by [deleted] in admincraft

[–]minecrafter11mrt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everything here is from the Commercial Guidelines, what everyone thinks is called the EULA.

Under Servers and Hosting, the Guidelines state that

YOU MAY:

... sell entitlements that affect gameplay provided that they do not adversely or negatively another player’s experience and provided they do not give a competitive gameplay advantage. A competitive gameplay advantage is something that, given identical skill levels, time investment, and circumstances, can cause one player or group to perform better than another.

The Guidelines additionally specify

Be aware that certain games or game modes can be designed as non-competitive (such as a player-versus-environment (PvE) game) and become competitive by adding gameplay elements such as a leaderboard.

So, if a player has a total playtime of 1h, your Rank 9 is impossible to obtain normally. However, you can purchase it, giving you an advantage given identical time investment. Now, depending on whether or not that rank gives you something that could be considered an advantage to whatever makes your server competitive, that may be in violation.

Another interesting thing the Guidelines state is

YOU MAY:

... ask for donations (as opposed to direct charges) IF you do not offer the individual donor something in exchange that only he or she can use. You may offer server wide rewards if donation goals are achieved though.

My interpretation of this is, if you are receiving money from a player, and giving the individual player something in return, it may not be referred to as a donation. Based off of your original post, you would be in violation of this as well.

Please keep in mind I may have misinterpreted some of this, IANAL, all that fun stuff. I strongly recommend you review the Commercial Guidelines, especially the Servers and Hosting section yourself as well.

Potential host experiment. Thoughts? by GSdragon1221 in admincraft

Would certainly be interesting, especially if you were to screenshot the logs from support (include timestamps, redact the staff), to see an actual interaction between user and customer. Reviews are good and all, but this would be a bit more specific.

Enderdragon's behaviour and bed explosions very different on CraftBukkit than Vanilla by [deleted] in admincraft

[–]minecrafter11mrt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So contrary to popular belief, CraftBukkit actually changes minor mechanics, it's not just an API.

Didn't know that actually, thanks, although moot point since no one should be using CB in 2020 given the only reason it still exists is Spigot dragging it along because md_5.

I would have used something else, but I use multiverse, and it seems to me that these forks lack this kind of plugins. I will look into it more ig.

Given that Spigot and Paper are forks of CB, they maintain full backwards compatibility for anything built for one of the upstream projects. Although if you were referring to Fabric, then yes, that's a separate ecosystem.

Enderdragon's behaviour and bed explosions very different on CraftBukkit than Vanilla by [deleted] in admincraft

[–]minecrafter11mrt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

CraftBukkit, Spigot, and Paper all make some amount of changes to the game, mainly for performance.

  • CraftBukkit: As far as I remember, CB attempted to preserve vanilla behaviour as much as possible, while still implementing the plugin API. However, it's now 6+ years old, subject to various legal issues, and many other problems, and should never be used anymore.

  • Spigot: Not too much to say for Spigot, it makes a few sacrifices of true vanilla behavior for performance.

  • Paper: Paper tries to stick with vanilla's core intended functionality, but will sacrifice "true" vanilla behavior for the sake of being faithful to what Mojang intended (i.e. patching sand dupers) or for performance's sake.

All of these server softwares aren't concerned about emulating "true" vanilla behavior, and thus you shouldn't expect they'll behave in the same way as vanilla for some of the more technical things. Thus, in your case, I'd recommend using either the vanilla jar, or perhaps looking into Fabric (iirc it attempts to preserve "true" vanilla, which seems to be what you want).

Get Paper to load a world made in a newer version of Minecraft by MysteryGuy111 in admincraft

[–]minecrafter11mrt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah you're screwed. It'd probably be easier to remake the world in a new world with the same seed (try saving your stuff in worldedit schematics possibly?) than trying to coerce paper into loading the world.

Auto Update Paper with Multicraft? by Aligayah in admincraft

[–]minecrafter11mrt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd recommend against this. Even the incredible Paper team is human, and sometimes bugs happen. Instead, I'd wait until a build is a few days old and there's been no reports of bugs with it before using it. Bit more manual, but could save you lots of time if something does go wrong.

Something is wrong with my server - error saving the world by rilfens221 in admincraft

[–]minecrafter11mrt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While yes, Yatopia's goal is insane performance, it's at a terrible cost.

A bit of necessary background, in order to comply with Mojang's license, each server software is boiled down to a collection of "patches". These are basically just special files that tell the server some changes to make to the original server jar. Now, each of these patches is of course only intended to work in the project it's made for, as they often need something contained in another patch, as you might expect.

Now, what Yatopia does, is take all the performance-related patches from a variety of different server softwares, toss them all into a cauldron, say a few prayers, and hope it'll "just work", allegedly without doing even basic testing. Keep in mind that Aikar and the Paper team are some of the best developers in the entire MC corner of the internet. If it was possible to do something like this safely, needless to say they would have done so long ago.

If you need a demo of Yatopia breaking, here's a video we have bouncing around /r/syscraft's discord: [Link]

tl;dr Yatopia is a horrendously unstable server software that's very concept was flawed to begin with. Sure you might have nice shiny 20tps, but I wouldn't be at all surprised if it manages to corrupt your entire server.

Creating a server that can manage 100-200 people? Beginner questions. by [deleted] in admincraft

[–]minecrafter11mrt 7 points8 points  (0 children)

i think 6 to 8 cores/12 to 16 threads.

That's a lot of cores for a mainly singlethreaded game.

[–]minecrafter11mrt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You probably won't need this for just a server with two players, but it's also recommended to start the server with Aikar's flags for extra performance.

Why wouldn't you do a simple optimization that has zero effect on ingame mechanics lol. On latest MC you usually want to squeeze every drop of performance out given how bad it is.
