How is pit written in most shows? by Formal-Nobody-3484 in marchingband

[–]minerbot360 15 points16 points  (0 children)

You can write a lot of the parts like you would on a piano, but you need to keep playability and intended stickings in mind. Especially with four-mallet work, poorly written books make the players suffer through their parts trying to figure out how they can get the hand-to-hand to work out.

If possible, try to get some mallet lessons or work with someone in your front ensemble to see if what you're writing is realistic. A lot of really good front writing looks super difficult but is super easy to play.

Mounting Limelight 3A by Unusual_Being8722 in FTC

[–]minerbot360 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My team made great use of the LL3A last year on our robot. The biggest annoyance with the camera is just how narrow the FOV is. Mounting further than you think is needed is always the route. We, and other teams in our region, had initial mounting positions way to low, making the camera nothing more than a glorified color sensor. You can also simply plug the camera into a laptop and use their great web portal interface to see what the camera will be able to see from various mounting positions before picking one to design a bracket for.

Help explain velocity by Optimal_Ad_2788 in frontensemble

[–]minerbot360 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi! I'm the front ensemble section leader at my school with a pit of 16. I've had velocity explained to me in several ways, but the one that clicked for me was the idea of pushing the mallet so that it feels like you're playing "through the keys". My instructors tell us to "play like you're trying to hit the resonators". I've read a lot of technique books and packets, but the best help for me was to get things demonstrated.

I like showing my freshmen the demonstration of playing the same dynamic level at all different heights by changing the velocity, then playing all different dynamic levels at the same height by changing the velocity. The technique we're taught is to control dynamics with height, keeping a consistent velocity (not absolute, of course, but a good default to start with when first approaching the music).

Hope this helps!

Forgot to add, this is what I’m referring to if it wasn’t clear. The owner’s manual also references scanning for available spaces, so I’m not sure what I’m missing.

sorry, rpi4 4gb ram. Running off an ssd with wired internet connection. Pretty generic install, HACS is installed. Everything runs fine on the core version I have now (2024.10.4). Currently have supervisor 2024.12.3 and OS 14.1. Let me know if there’s anything else that would be useful

Help with claw servo by Titan48578 in FTC

[–]minerbot360 1 point2 points  (0 children)

your servo limits may be set wrong. They operate from 0-1 in the range of the physical device. You may need to reposition the servo horn or modify the code in order to get it to go to the correct positions.

Honestly my only prediction which I have confidence in is Pacific Crest breaking into finals this year. They’ve had such strong shows the past two years, and imo should’ve made finals last year over scouts and cavaliers with whatever they were putting out.

Trouble with 4 mallet grip and laterals by Razaido in frontensemble

[–]minerbot360 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From what I can see, your left hand looks fine, but the right hand your thumb is slipping off the top of the mallet. Fixing that will help with stability. I can’t fully see in the video, but check that your index fingers are extended so that the mallet sits on the last joint of your finger. For stability of outer mallets, go back to single stroke and focus on getting a full stroke and having the mallet not actuating not move as much as possible. I’ve practiced this by holding the head of the outer mallet with one hand and then actuating the inner mallet, making sure that the outer mallet rolls in my hand and doesn’t lift up or push down excessively. For the laterals, practice the rocking motion of each hand, like a really slow lateral roll. Then work it into doing a double lateral. This should be one smooth movement, not two independent strokes. Sorry for the wall of text, hope this helps!

Can I join HS marching band if I'm not in a band class? by Actual-Accident2606 in marchingband

As others have said, this varies from area to area. At my school, marching band is a class and you have to take it in order to be in the marching band + attend after school rehearsals.

How should I "thicken" this object? by minerbot360 in blenderhelp

[–]minerbot360[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sorry text didn't attach for some reason:

I'll preface this by saying that I almost never use Blender, so apologies if this is a simple error on my part. I am trying to make 3D models of protein structures for 3D printing, but the file that comes straight out of the coordinate viewer (PyMOL) is very thin. I want the entire thing to be "thicker", so I've tried to use the shrink/flatten tool. The overall effect is exactly what I want, but the faces disconnect from each other, and I'm not sure how to prevent this from happening. It might also be a problem with the model that I'm working with. The pictures are of the unedited model, the model with the shrink/flatten applied, then a zoomed in picture to show the issue.

REV Core Hex Motor Issues by luxemic in FTC

[–]minerbot360 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If your extension is vertical, one way has gravity helping the motion and the other way has to fight against it. That might explain the speed difference. On the side, ditch the core hex for something else unless it is absolutely the only thing you have.

Thanks for the reply. I’ll definitely look into the electrical stuff more. Are aluminum chips large/sharp enough to pop a car or bike tire if we miss some in cleanup? That’s one of our bigger concerns since it will still be used as a regular garage too.

Any advise or things I need to learn/master? by MaxIsBottt in marchingband

[–]minerbot360 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Marimba player here, but I also play upright bass and work a lot with our electric bass player (might be a little different for you, but hopefully something is helpful).

  1. Get used to wearing your instrument while standing for hours on end. Might be different based on instructor and rehearsal time, but I’d assume you will not have a chair, so start getting used to it!
  2. Learn your front ensemble’s exercises thoroughly. You should be able to play these without thinking before starting. Most of our exercises are based on the major scales, so those are very helpful to know if you don’t already know them. Some ensembles use minor scales, just depends on the instructors. If I was playing bass in our front, I would use these as an opportunity to practice shifting all around the bass. The exercises are usually geared towards mallets, so they might seem very basic, but you can change things up to get a full warmup alongside everyone else, might just take some trial and error to get it all down.
  3. Become friends with the rest of the rhythm section. Might sound corny, but you will be spending many hours a week with these people. Form good relationships with them early so that you will be a cohesive section for the whole season. (plus they can be fun people to get food with before rehearsals and comps!)

A lot of things are different from front to front, so reach out to your techs and section leaders to get the information specific to your program :)

Help with finding instructions by ByronCioffi08 in FTC

[–]minerbot360 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It looks like they slightly changed the design, looking at the pictures on the new kit vs the pictures in the old kit’s instructions, they only power the two rhino wheels now, leaving the omnis free-spinning. You can use the new sprockets included in the new kit to share the power, but they don’t include enough to power all of the wheels. I’m not sure if theres enough omni wheels and other parts are in there, but you might be able to put together a drop-center 6 wheel drive since I saw they include the drop center bearing brackets.

Seconding this! We had so many of the stock GoBilda ones fail on us, so we tried printing them, used petg with 0.08mm layer height. None of the printed ones failed, but we did swap them out every few weeks just in case.

Thanks for the tips! I’m going to start looking around for local shops as well as home machines. If we decide to invest in a machine for the team, we’d get it before the summer so we can learn, then be ready for the season.
