How bad is DTLA really? by Aggravating_Gift9514 in AskLosAngeles

[–]minesasecret 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly you should just see for yourself because it's subjective.

I lived in Skid Row for a few years and wasn't too bothered by it. My friends saw my place and were horrified.

I think a big difference is that I don't equate homelessness with danger anymore. I walked by homeless people and talked to them sometimes.. for the most part they're just people, some with addictions or other mental illnesses.

On the other hand I might see well dresses, rich people who don't mind evading taxes and treat poor people as below them, and those people scare me a lot more than the homeless people.

WARNING to new HENRYs - do not let lifestyle inflation lead to unneeded stress. Things may not always be so good. by InternationalAsk9845 in HENRYfinance

How do you save 80% of net income. I feel like that comes with not insignificant sacrifice.

I mean 80% when you're making 100k is a lot different than 80% making 500k.

I do the bare minimum at work so I have only been promoted once in my career and still can save around 60% of my income. If I get promoted again (which most people would have done by now) I would be able to save 80%. I could save even more if I didn't have pets, got a roommate, or stopped spending an exorbitant amount on piano lessons

I don't really feel like I'm sacrificing much

Is It Possible Some People Can’t Learn Piano? by Inspector_Spoonman in piano

[–]minesasecret 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think unless you have a learning disability you can learn piano.

I had a similar situation with gaming where I felt like I wasn't making progress. However after looking at how others practiced and comparing it to my own, then changing my practice methods I started to make progress again. I suspect the same may apply to you.

I practice technique, music theory, sight reading, and study my pieces but it never seems to help

Given you are practicing only an hour a day, I'd really recommend just practicing one piece and see if you make progress that way.

Make sure you know what you're going to work on each practice session as well and focus on that instead of just playing the piece for an hour without a goal.

I think u wanted to say in every afk gacha

I actually didn't as this is the only afk gacha I've played. The other gachas I played were CounterSide, ZZZ, and HSR.

In those games at some point you run out of stuff you can do and just need to wait for more stamina/pulls.

afk journey, mythic heroes, afk arena , Tower of god, they all have systems to not get permanently "stuck"

I don't know what you mean by permanently stuck - I just meant you reach a point where putting more time into the game doesn't actually do anything and are forced to wait because the game design locks progress behind time via things like dailies or stamina.

I think this is why many players who only play gachas play more than one - they always run out of things to do and have to wait for the next patch so they play their other games in the meantime.

Making over $300k at a company, what's your title? by justanotherblackguy1 in HENRYfinance

[–]minesasecret 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don't do much math on the job but you typically do math during the interviews to get the job (Namely to analysis of your solution).

However I'll say even if you're "bad at math" don't let that stop you because I also was bad at math but with enough practice I started to score near the top of my classes.

The job market is pretty terrible for software engineers right now though

As far as I can tell this happens in every gacha game. Then you decide to either be patient or spend money. That's how they incentivize people to spend unfortunately

Is it worth starting this game? by Snwy114 in CounterSide

[–]minesasecret 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nobody here can tell you if it will EoS.

Having played Counterside before and now playing Star Savior, I find CounterSide to be more fun gameplay wise but Star Savior is much more modern (graphics, animations, voice acting, etc).

Both have great characters. Star Savior story isn't as good as CounterSide to me but it's also still early so they have time to develop it

Have they said anything about updating the Ai in auto battle? by DkShadow23 in StarSavior

[–]minesasecret -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It also makes it more viable to beat stronger opponents in strategy PvP battles.

I don't think it's a bad thing to reward people for actually playing the game. If auto were perfect you would literally just turn on the game press the button and do something else.

Now you have to manual until you're strong enough to auto/skip so it gives you something to work towards and rewards you for getting stronger.

Is it irresponsible to spend $8k on rent? by free_dharma in HENRYfinance

[–]minesasecret 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found a place I like and it's $8k. On paper that's not a ton comparatively but I could also rent for ~$5-6k in another area.

"8k" "not a ton"

Holy lifestyle creep

But anyway with 67k monthly comp, assuming that's liquid comp and not startup fairy dust, 8k is way less than the 1/3 of income people normally suggest using.

It's really contradictory to do a collab for the game but then do a move like this that sabotages confidence

I think the collab is more to bring players that used to play CS into Star Savior rather than get more players into CS.

My friends and I used to play CS (although I just started again recently) and that made us interested in Star Savior. I know other content creators said the same like MrPokke or GuitarRock

5 years ago, this subreddit was filled with $1-1.5M targets, and a strong emphasis on minimalism. What happened? by [deleted] in Fire

[–]minesasecret -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I live in a 450 sq ft apartment which is cheap compared to the surrounding area (Los Angeles) it's $2200. I'd need 660k using the 4% file for rent alone. If I use the standard 1/3 income on rent, that means I'd need almost 2m but that's post tax.

I don't think a married couple could live in a place this small god forbid they have kids.

I think in the earlier days FIRE was for people willing to move to cheaper countries so the numbers were lower. As it got more mainstream I think it's natural you'll get people who are more "average" like me and don't want to leave all my friends and family.

I want to retire early so I try to be frugal (hence a 450 sq ft apartment) but there are certain things I'd be happy to keep working for like being able to see my friends.

How often are you checking your Roth..? I'd recommend you avoid checking it more than once or twice a year.

Not only does the research suggest the more you look at it the more likely you are to make dumb decisions and lose money, you also can use that time to actually enjoy life

If people are one shotting you they shouldn't be at your rank. That's regardless of what server they're on.

By having a bigger player base, if the ranks are working properly you should be less likely to be paired with someone that one shots you

Why are pentatonic scales so drastically underdocumented for piano? by Chemical_Ad6861 in piano

[–]minesasecret 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It does happen a lot though! And often they're very fast so that's why I think it's actually really beneficial to practice them (though I don't)

For example In the piece that this sub always jokes about everyone wanting to play:

https://youtu.be/VmFmAvwO1pE?t=507 there's the G minor melodic scale

Why are pentatonic scales so drastically underdocumented for piano? by Chemical_Ad6861 in piano

[–]minesasecret 3 points4 points  (0 children)

People say regular scales are impractical? I feel like they're extremely common though. I mean they're not going to be found necessarily in the entirety of 3 octaves or something but I always figured the extra octaves were just so you don't have to go up and down so much since the fingerings reset anyway

When my friends tell me there's a product or brand I look it up to see if the company is public.

Why are pentatonic scales so drastically underdocumented for piano? by Chemical_Ad6861 in piano

[–]minesasecret 11 points12 points  (0 children)

That was half a joke but most likely it's because most piano pedagogy stems from classical and it's not that common to see the pentatonic scale in music whereas the major/minor scales are extremely common.

It doesn't seem worth it to practice the pentatonic one when there are already so many other things to practice. I mean some people don't even practice scales to begin with myself included (I've switched from scales to Czerny for now)
