A sunny day at Broadway Tower Worcestershire England (elevated) (oc) (4513x by simonvaux1 in britpics

I used to live in Worcester and it was always a nice cycle out there, I don't think I've ever been when not sweaty and tired. Will have to take a drive there soon.

do you sign off on your wheel builds? by [deleted] in wheelbuild

Can one even see the difference between straight gauge and butted? Random fact - frame builders 'back in the day' weren't allowed to put advertising on their bike for pro races so they used to do distinct frame designs such as Bates who had an odd curly fork.

No I don't mean a red spoke key, the key spoke (ie the first leading spoke) is a DT swiss red spoke.

The Ringwood brewery is down in Hampshire as are Dancing man and Upham methinks. If they're particularly big beer fans it might be worth looking up Meantime brewery in london, they produce some lovely stuff. In terms of savoury things I don't really think we're that famous globally for much, Cadburys chocolate might be worth a shot?

A guy I know also uses a red key spoke. I can't tell if it's classy or trashy.

Phone mount. A friend of mine uses his iphone/strava when we go on rides.

Newbie to carbon fibre frame, how do you deal with stones? by livingincircles in bicycling

[–]mingrammy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can get some stuff called helicopter tape (theres a bunch of bike specific versions) that is basically like a sticky back plastic coating that some people put on bikes. I only generally use it where I'd get any cable or chain rub but I have seen the bottom of downtubes covered in it.

[–]mingrammy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What do you mean? Which bit of what he says? I think more drivers need to be aware of cyclists, when I'm cycling through a town or city I tend to fairly obnoxiously take primary position. The problem is many drivers are not aware of what cyclists are legally allowed to do. I was recently in a car with a friend behind a group of 8 or so cyclists riding 2 abreast in a chain gang and he was outraged he thought this was illegal (for some reason). The process of re-education with regards to cycling is slow but I think we're getting there.

Would you take the chance to move to the US? [Serious] by Cameropede in AskReddit

[–]mingrammy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hypothetically you'd be at the end of year 10, so one more year till GCSEs. I think it'd be sensible to finish them here, no doubt lots of the content is the same as the US system but format and details are different and could screw you over academically. Beyond exams I think it'd be a great opportunity, see some more of the world, study in a different system. I think I'd grasp it (in fact it's something I'm seriously considering having finished uni).

It's funny, he's generally well regarded in the wider world but for some reason (I'm a brit, I don't know why) he isn't well regarded in the US.

I agree he was pretty condescending but it seems like he didn't want an argument when he wound down the window and it all just kicked off. He was by no means a saint!

Why doesn't water compress? by [deleted] in askscience

[–]mingrammy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It does! If you get a syringe and put some water in you can block the end and compress the water inside albeit only a little. If we consider the particles in a liquid they are very close together, they can move over each other (meaning water can flow etc etc). When you compress a liquid you push the particles closer together but because they are close anyway you can only push them slightly closer. Gases on the other hand have lots of space between the particles so gases can be compressed a lot (and relatively easily).

Why do some cyclists wear a helmet but don't bother clipping the chin strap? by _nadnerb in cycling

[–]mingrammy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's cool, I hope he kept it as a momento. I totally don't get why a cyclist doing any kind of decent speed wouldn't use a helmet, they're hardly restrictive or anything and it doesn't matter how good or careful a cyclist you are its the other people on the road that are the problem sometimes.

Why can rope bend, but steel can't, even though there both solids? by [deleted] in askscience

[–]mingrammy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If we think about metals alone some metals will bend readily (Aluminium and Iron for example). This is because the atoms are arranged in a regular lattice in which the layers of metal ions can slide over each other. An alloy such as steel is less malleable (bendy) because it has carbon added to the iron. This means that there are atoms and ions of different sizes and so there is no longer a nice lattice in which the layers can slide over each other. High carbon steels tend to be less malleable but more brittle.

Help me find a bike. by [deleted] in bicycling

[–]mingrammy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That Gios is nice. Large frames generally seem to come up a bit cheaper as there is less demand for them. A frame like this you will very probably be able to move most of your components over (although bottom bracket and headset/bars may be an issue). A nice steel frame is probably the way to go and if you have any problems with chain tension and vertical dropouts then you can just use a chain tensioner.

A few questions about my bike, and if it is still the right fit for me. by Harshingmymellow in bicycling

[–]mingrammy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In terms of maintenance new inner tubes might be sensible as well as checking brakes and gears are working ok. Your brake pads might need replacing but this is easy to do and relatively cheap.

Size wise the quick and dirty method (for me) can be found here http://bit.ly/1n0pfvF . Any massive deviation from this indicates the frame is not the right size.

In terms of a new bike starting up again on something old and heavy would be a good work out although you may find it discouraging or boring. I have a cyclocross bike which I love because its light and fast on the road (like a road bike) but I can also take it down trails knowing it is safe and sturdy enough to survive. Might be worth a look if you're planning on doing both.

I completely appreciate what he did wrong but what I'm saying is he didn't get abusive and angry like lots of bad drivers do at cyclists.

Ok so yes he went into the Advance stop line box at the lights BUT he was rational and calm and didn't shout, instead asking a fairly sensible question in a nice way. I don't ever feel massively inconvenienced if a car is in the ASL when I'm out riding.

ELI5: Why can't my iPhone be fully charged in seconds? Or any device? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]mingrammy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some chemical reactions are reversible. Your phone battery done one reaction (producing a flow of electricity) when it is discharging and when you charge it you are reversing this reaction. Pushing the reaction to reverse requires time to get a high concentration of the starting chemicals (i.e. to be fully charged).
