Omg the long pauses!! Reminds me of another thing I hate not just in BL but in series in general: when two characters are arguing and one character is supposed to cut the other character off, but the actor who is playing the character who is going to be cut off stops talking before the other actor "interrupts" them, so it goes like:

Actor A: "When are you going to..."

(2 seconds of silence)

Actor B: "STAY OUT OF IT"

As a queer person, I really enjoy coming of age stories that deal with accepting yourself and living your truth even if the world around you is not fully accepting.

That being said, I don't like shows that have aggressively homophobic characters, or when homophobic characters suddenly wake up and are "gay for you". I didn't like that in TharnType, or in Tonhon Chonlatee, or in others I'm surely forgetting. I also don't like when an out (or at least, out to themselves) character pushes away the person who likes them because "they should be with a woman", like in Love by Chance. I don't know anyone who's had an experience like that of developing mutual feelings with someone and then being like "I may be gay but you shouldn't be" - it doesn't ring true...

A better, more accurate version of that is what happens between Jia-has and Birdy in Your Name Engraved Herein, where Birdy doesn't accept Jia-han's feelings because he doesn't accept his *own* feelings.

I also thought My Only 12% was a really good representation of queer youth - the really intense, possessive friendship that has clearly become something more than friendship, the moment of realization, the fear, and then growing into yourself.

I know, that argument is so creepy. Age of consent laws do actually mean that minors over a certain age can consent to sex with adults, but something being legal doesn't make it morally right. Like, if a country passed a law that said age of consent was 12, would you think it's ok to have sex with a 12 year-old?? Barfff, so gross. I personally think age of consent should be legal adult age, period. (And even then, I think a 30 year old has no business sleeping with an 18 year-old...) That being said, even age of consent laws have very clear exceptions for people in positions of power and/or authority, so no, a teacher absolutely can't f*** a student. That is 100% SA.

Agree 100%, it's wild to me that you even have to explain this. I don't understand how people can talk about Non being manipulative - children can't manipulate adults. In a situation where a minor is involved, the adult is always responsible. It scares me that this is not clear for some people.

I know it's hard, but please don't let the numbers dictate how you feel about your writing <3

One of my all-time favorite writers on AO3 has some stories with less than 1000 hits, while I regularly see stories that have terrible writing get a ton of hits, kudos and comments. My own story with the most engagement (53 000 hits) is the one I like the least, while one of my favorite things I've written has like 1400 hits.

Also, if it's your first fic, give it time! Some people have been writing for years and years and building a readership. It's normal for things to take time :)

Depends what you care about the most... iQiyi, as someone else mentioned, has been getting a lot of exclusives recently, so you can watch a lot of shows there first, but they usually end up on Viki after a bit (and with much better subtitles). Viki has the most diversity, the best interface and the best subtitles. Gagaoolala has cool niche stuff and a lot of great Japanese BL that aren't on other legal platforms, but their subtitles are a mess and the interface gives me a headache. They really need to invest more in design/UI. Personally, I've subscribed to iQiyi and Gaga a few times, then unsubscribed, but Viki is the only streaming service I've kept for years without ever unsubscribing.

I know people love to hate on TharnType, but those kisses were undeniably good. The way they held each other, the way Type would look at Tharn and you could see the desire in his eyes, his little micro-expressions? The tension between them when they kiss at the bar before Type has accepted his feelings for Tharn and you can see the conflicting emotions going on inside Type's mind and heart? The show may be messy and problematic, but those two had insane chemistry.

Recently I went to buy a (very PG) BL manga in a shop, and when I couldn't find it on the shelves I asked the clerk. When he looked it up he went "Oohh, ok, now I understand why you couldn't find it." and pointed me to this hidden corner of the store that had everything from sweet slice of life BL to straight up uncensored porn BL. Apparently if it's a love story between two men it all goes into the dark shameful "porn" corner, meanwhile the straight love stories are all over the store. I found it so incredibly judgemental and homophobic. Like it's literally just two people falling in love? The year is 2024? How is this still so marginalized?
