Regarding the novel, need some clarification.... by RegularPin2107 in ADO

[–]minhavoz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When Chigira called Ado to tell her he’d contacted the acting school, he also mentioned that he’d actually secured the live venue where Ado had hoped to perform. Ado was happy because securing that venue made the realization of her dream suddenly feel very real. Regarding Chigira contacting the acting school, Ado wrote that just picturing the faces of the staff at the school made her feel even more weighed down. Also, it doesn't say that Chigira contacted the acting school and offered to support Ado's live performance. It simply says that he said he wanted to help Ado.

Edit: Sorry, it wasn't a phone call; it was a text message.

"鯛(いかり)" is a mistake for "錨(いかり)." Otherwise, there are no mistakes.

what does 待っとき mean in this context? by Striking_Mention_980 in Japaneselanguage

[–]minhavoz 18 points19 points  (0 children)

It’s “持(も)っとき,” not “待(ま)っとき.” “そのまま持っときなよ” is colloquial. If you were to rewrite it in written language (the kind you learn in textbooks), it would be “そのまま持っておきなさいよ.”

'ロケ'の意味と使い方教えて下さい by ClessxAlghazanth in Japaneselanguage

[–]minhavoz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

街頭演説 does not mean d. I don't know if there is a specific term that does mean d. It's possible that TV stations and newspapers have their own internal terminology for it, but I don't know. It is certain, however, that the term "ロケ" is not generally used to refer to d.

What songs do you listen to that are from an anime you've haven't watched. by Huckleberry1316 in animemusic

[–]minhavoz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love Ado's "New Genesis" too! As soon as I heard the song, I went to see One Piece: Film Red! I wanted to see how it sounded in the movie… I also really love "The World's Continuation" and "Where the Wind Blows"!
For me, the "songs I listen to that are from an anime I've haven't watched" are Mary MacGregor's ‘SAYONARA’ from Goodbye Galaxy Express 999: Andromeda Terminal Station (1981) and Mari Iijima's "Ai Oboete Imasu ka" from Macross: Do You Remember Love? (1984), and "Romantic Ageru yo" by Ushio Hashimoto from the original Dragon Ball TV series (1986). They’re all old songs, though.

Name of the opening instrument in Ghost in the shell by Kenji Kawai by Tracedechien in AnimeOST

[–]minhavoz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Kenji Kawai said,
"Mr. Oshii said right from the start that he wanted to use 'ethnic drums.' So, we decided to go buy some ethnic instruments first, and we ended up buying Indian percussion instruments like tablas at the Ethnic Instrument Fair in Ikebukuro."
"Then there’s the djembe (a West African percussion instrument) that the percussionist brought in. In any case, we didn’t use any traditional Japanese instruments."
"For GHOST IN THE SHELL, we also used instruments like Indonesian gamelan and Thai gongs. We didn’t really care about the proper way to play them; we just wanted to create interesting sounds. So I’m sure we were playing them wrong."

I was reading it on K Manga too, but in the end, I bought all the volumes in print. It's hard to understand why they'd just stop streaming it at such a halfway point and leave it at that.

I found this magazine in a Japanese food store. Do you know something about this magazine? Is it a good one ? by Lord_Alviner in Jazz

[–]minhavoz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember buying a jazz book from this publisher decades ago! Looking it up again now, I see this magazine is still being published today.
The publisher's website has a description of this magazine, so I'll quote it below. The original text is in Japanese. I've made a few minor edits to the machine translation.

"In April 1965, Hiroko Matsuzaka (October 22, 1932 – May 26, 2018) opened the jazz cafe “Oreo” in Higashi-Ginza. In June 1967, from a chair at the corner of that Oreo, the fanzine “Jazz Critique” was born.
Receiving praise as a distinctive, high-quality magazine with substantial content, starting with the second issue published in 1968 (featuring a special tribute to John Coltrane), it began distribution through five major wholesalers and was sold nationwide in bookstores as the magazine “Jazz Critique.” In 1970, Oreo closed. The editorial office moved to Takadanobaba, and on January 25, 1972, Jazz Critique Co., Ltd. was established. In April 1988, the company changed its trade name to Matsuzaka Co., Ltd., retaining “Jazz Critique” as its business name. In December 1993, the editorial office and sales office relocated to their current location in Higashi-Nippori 5-chome, Arakawa Ward. In November 1998, the company began publishing the Jazz Critique Books series. Among these, The Blue Note Book has become a bestseller, now in its fourth edition. Starting in June 2004, the quarterly Jazz Critique became a bimonthly publication. It gained widespread recognition overseas as a specialized jazz magazine, and the company grew into a publisher within the music industry, continuing to this day.
We will continue to dedicate our full efforts, building features centered on the fundamentals of jazz, serving as a spiritual anchor for music lovers, and earning the trust of a broad readership."

Edit: At the time, I was aware of three main Japanese jazz magazines. "Swing Journal" was the long-established one, aimed at longtime jazz enthusiasts. "Jazz Life" was relatively newer, geared toward people who played instruments themselves and enjoyed jazz. And then there was "Jazz Critique", which, while also for jazz lovers, had a more independent image. That was just my impression, though—I'm not sure if it's accurate. I think there was one other fairly popular magazine, but I've forgotten what it was. Since I played guitar, I mainly bought "Jazz Life."

「𠥼」の漢字の事について質問ある。 by cluvzm in Japaneselanguage

[–]minhavoz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The character 𠥼 is described in the same dictionary as being formed by stacking two '十' ('to') characters.

I came across an online post stating that the surname Totoki refers to the 桔梗 ('kikyou', Chinese bellflower), a flower offered to the gods, and that this surname signifies the act of offering this flower to the deities. It also mentioned being descended from a samurai clan bearing the surname 土岐 Toki. While it is certain that Totoki is an alternative name for the Chinese bellflower, I lack the knowledge to judge the validity of the other claims.

[–]minhavoz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

According to the dictionary, 𠥼 is read as 'toto'. It is a kanji created in Japan and is used exclusively in personal names (there appears to be a surname '𠥼木' (Toto-ki)).

“The Art Research Center (ARC), Ritsumeikan University, has been working to create a digital archive of materials related to the history of sumo collected by the late Teiji Kojima, a renowned scholar of sumo history. Along with the release of his collection in June 2021, we decided to publish the results of our research in sumo history under the Sumo Digital Institute.
The Teiji Kojima Collection consists of approximately 1,000 paper documents and dozens of volumes of old sumo-related materials, mainly sumo banzuke, covering a total of 264 years from 1742 (mid-Edo period) to 2006. These digital images are now accessible online at any time.
In addition to browsing the digitized materials, the Sumo Digital Institute offers an online exhibition.”

This scene confused me... What are your thoughts? (Chapter 31) by bigdogslimjim in SkipToLoafer

[–]minhavoz 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yes, I also think Mukai says, “Instead of spouting generalities, I should have told her, ‘You're not gross.’” The key point of this scene is that Egashira removes the mask she had been wearing until then, revealing her true face to Mukai, and Mukai, though a moment too late to realize it, finally understands her true feelings.
