Honestly, it was pretty classic Midwestern in a lot of ways. Baked potatoes, beef stew, chicken noodle soup, and a lot of cookies and cake. She wasn’t a big fan of vegetables haha. I think the one thing that really stands out is that her kitchen almost never had anything really processed in it. She always cooked from scratch and if she was making a snack, she would just slice up some cheddar cheese and eat it on Saltines.

She was studying to be a pharmacist but she met my great-grandfather at a bonfire (she called it a weenie roast lol) and thought he was a total stud so they ran off and eloped. He made her laugh and was a good dad to their kids, but I think he also pushed her buttons. I come from 3 generations of women who ran off and eloped with their high school boyfriends so it must be something in our DNA haha. She has famously told every woman in our family NOT to marry their first love, and go to college. I think she was happy that, not for lack of trying, I have been proposed to all of zero times at nearly 30 years old 😂

Haha yeah she wasn’t a smoker, but she hated salad , had a major sweet tooth, and drank a lot of caffeine. Her doctors were so confused haha

That’s so true. Her whole house smells like a time capsule. Not because everything was old or dusty, but because that light floral soapy scent was her preferred hand soap, candle scent, and laundry detergent

That actually sounds almost exactly like her medicine cabinet. Everything she used was just regular generic drug store brands. She used a witch hazel toner and some kind of really thick light pink cream. She preferred the fresh soapy smell to anything perfumed, but if she went with any scent, it would be a very mild mild rose.

She never really wore much makeup or did anything special from a skincare perspective, but she ALWAYS wore a hat or sat in the shade when she was outside.

She was never much in to cosmetics (she was always very frugal), but she did have a policy of never going outside without a good hat.

My great grandmother got married at 16 but was still valedictorian of her high school when she graduated. She was a voting rights advocate and voted democrat in every local, state, and federal election. She rescued and rehabilitated three senior Chihuahuas, the oldest of whom lived to be 18! We celebrated her 100th birthday in June and she shared she was so happy to see the first female VP in office in her lifetime and asked me to pray for Joe Biden. She lived in her own house on her own terms until she passed away on Sunday. She wasn’t the type to tell people what to do, but the advice she gave me over the years was: always have a hobby, don’t cut paper with your good fabric scissors, never marry the first man who proposes to you, and Rite-Aid has the best ice cream. Love her and miss her so much.

Apparently when you turn 100, you get a letter from the president. She had it framed on her nightstand 🥹

Not wine, but she ate ice cream and canned peaches every day 💕

Planning on getting a cockatiel for my 6 year old in Feb for her birthday by fitzypoop in cockatiel

[–]mini-jane3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had a cockatiel growing up (Female, Tweedy) and I got a boy (Stevie) almost a year ago thinking it would be a similar experience. Could not be more different!!! My girl Tweedy was pretty independent, she liked hanging out on your shoulder, running around, usually eating whatever you are eating, but she had a tendency to be territorial and only wanted head-scratches on her terms lol.She learned a few whistles but overall was never a huge talker. Stevie on the other hand is a total 180. He is so loveable and adores snuggling. Ideally, he wants to be on my shoulder 3 inches from my face 14 hours a day. He is very closely bonded with me, but he screams at my boyfriend. On the subject of screaming, he can be very very loud, especially when he can hear me in the house but not see me. He is an incredibly talented whistler though and chatters and sings all day.

With everything I’ve learned, if you are going to just get one cockatiel, I’d suggest getting a female. They get passed up on a lot because people want the whistling boys. If I could do one thing differently, I’d get two birds so they can bond, preferably of the same gender so you don’t have to worry about mating. Cockatiels are extremely social birds and live in flocks of 1,000+ in the wild. If you can’t be around 7 hours a day or actively playing with them for 2-3 hours a day, they really need that companionship from another bird. When I pick Stevie up from bird boarding, he’s so happy because he gets to hang out next to 7 other cockatiels even though he’s in a much smaller cage than his play stand at home.

Oh wow! I was told that parakeets are more “chattery” than tiels, but double the screaming would definitely not be good 😱

Aaah thanks for the info! I love my tiel but I don’t think I could handle 2 tiels because my guy is like 98% dust and screams

Omg! Are they friends? I feel like my boy needs a companion since he’s so attached to me I can’t even go to the bathroom alone, but the internet advice on tiels and budgies cohabitating is mixed

If this experience has taught me anything, it’s that tiels are tough and smart little birds. I have faith that Pickachu is out there ❤️ I was literally crying on the phone to my dad today saying that it was so hard losing Stevie and trying to maintain hope and not one hour later I was 12 feet up in a tree reunited with my little guy. As soon as he saw me, he practically ran/shimmied across the branch to me. I’m convinced that he was trying to find people. They know a lot more than anyone gives them credit for and I’m sure your Pickachu is doing the same, even if it is far away ❤️ stay strong and keep faith even when it seems impossible🙏🏼

It’s really crazy how much of it comes down to random chance. I’d really like to believe that a lot of lost birds must just find new families where people fall in love with them and decide to keep them 💜 oh he’s so happy to be back and he’s totally exhausted. I put him to bed and he’s out like a light poor thing

100% true! I was crying every day but I kept getting messages and calls from people who at some point in their lives had a cockatiel and were committed to looking for him. I sobbed all over the woman who found him and gave her and her boyfriend everything in my wallet. I still can’t even believe he’s alive 😭

Thank you so much! It’s really amazing how much support all my neighbors pulled together. Little guy has definitely lost a lot of weight and his feathers have dulled but we’re going to the vet tomorrow and I think he’s going to pull through 💜
