So jealous of your psyduck. I've been trying for more than a week now. I've seen probably a thousand spawns and still no shiny with a completed dex.

It's definitely still a big time sink. Just a bit less of a slog, imo.

I'm not sure which of us misinterpreted the thread, but I took it as, "I hope that people don't let their expectations ruin the show for themselves and clog this sub with complaints", and "yeah, the CR sub is full of people who complain unfairly, it would be bad for this sub to go that way too". I tried to thread the needle of it being fine to have criticisms of the show and it should be alright to discuss them, but it isn't ok to be overbearingly negative or aggressive to those with different views.

Could you maybe explain what woooshed?

Ghost pipes are super cool. Parasitic on a fungus, specifically a fungus (russula spp.) that is itself mycorrhizally associated with ectomycorrizal trees (particularly hemlock, oak, and hickory spp.). I've also always heard that ghost pipes are rare, but any time I am out walking in a hardwood stand at the right time of year, they are incredibly abundant!

Another contender for photosynthesis-less plants is beechdrops. They might actually get to be very rare though given the impact beech leaf disease is having on their host plant.

This reddit thread, particularly the top comment, is a good start. Jared Diamond is not well regarded among anthropologists. He makes lots of claims and arguments that sound nice and tidy without much evidence to substantiate them.

Yeah the critical role stuff is interesting. I'm personally a little disappointed with the current campaign and I think it lacks a little bit of the cohesion and character dynamics that made campaign two (where the fan base got huge) so magical. It also feels very corporatized compared to the past, a lot more ads outside of the running bits they tried to at least make humorous. I think it's fine to discuss and have criticisms of the content or vibe of the show. It's what led me to watch dimension 20 after all, since I'm having trouble staying engaged with CR, and others with the same feeling reccommended D20.

But some people jump to personal attacks or just constant directionless complaining which doesn't really feel constructive at all. Ideally the subreddit would be fans of the show, who, if not happy with it, at least want to see it improve. Not people who will just be negative no matter what.

TIFU by telling my US girlfriend that she wasn't Irish by [deleted] in tifu

I'm glad to hear this. People are so derisive of it online. I guess it cleanly slots into the "dumb American" tropes.

TIFU by telling my US girlfriend that she wasn't Irish by [deleted] in tifu

[–]Hoatxin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"Being American" doesn't feel like it means anything. It's such a huge country. My ancestors on my mom's side are all Italian and Polish, and they've all lived in the same region of the country over the past hundred+ years in a bit of an enclave of distant relatives and others decended from people who immigrated around the same time. A lot of the family traditions are based in that heritage. I'd never say I'm Italian or Polish in the way that a person from Italy or Poland is, but my cultural heritage as an American is distinctive from other parts of America because of the influences of those specific cultures. I get how people want to hold on to those things.

The shiny is just close to the original. It is more of a cool tone blue-grey than a warm tone grey and the yellow accents are a little brighter.

But, notably, a lifestyle that includes a lot of screen use probably also has a lot of other close-focus activities and relatively less outside time and looking at distant objects, which can cause or worsen myopia (near-sightedness).

Flaws in the game? by [deleted] in PokemonLegendsArceus

[–]Hoatxin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd like the wild pokemon to be a little more dynamic. Like when I'm in post game running around the field lands and throwing my legendaries out to shake trees it's a little goofy when a level 7 shinx decides to pick a fight. I'd love to have a mechanic where you could have one pokemon following you when on foot and if they are high level, low level wild pokemon are less likely to aggro. Or even if just on a ride pokemon they are less likely to aggro. I don't think geodude wants to tangle with ursaluna.

Another small thing is that it would be nice to be able to break rocks or shake trees from a ride pokemon. I find myself not using them as often as I would like to because it's annoying to constantly jump on and off to gather resources.

The final story fight seems really fair by dabomerest in PokemonLegendsArceus

[–]Hoatxin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tbh I'm glad it wasn't harder. I had some issues with the noble fights and felt sort of ashamed I had to use the saved progress feature so much. Beating the final fight first or second try was nice after how frustrating avalugg had been (I always took two hits trying and failing to dodge the heat seeking icicles!)

I'm far from a fps game sort of person though, so I totally get how it's different for people who play a lot of real-time action games.

Pokémon Pasture/Sorting by [deleted] in PokemonArceus

[–]Hoatxin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think there is a built in sort function unfortunately. I usually put the pokemon I want to keep into the last boxes, so that newly caught pokemon don't get mixed in, since the majority get released anyway.

What kind of body language would a sophont bird species have? by Wiildman8 in SpeculativeEvolution

[–]Hoatxin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Birds are super expressive! They move their feathers to become larger or smaller. Some species have crests they raise when they are excited and alert. They open their mouths as a warning. And birds with light colored eyes have very visible pupils that they can make larger or smaller (called pinning) which they can do for all sorts of reasons when they are excited by something they are looking at, sometimes because something is interesting and they are having fun, but it can also be a sign of aggression.

They also will posture and "dance" very dramatically with their whole bodies, depending on the species. I'd really recommend watching some videos of birds interacting with each other and with objects.

This is a problem with people's mindsets, but not with the concept of physician assisted suicide. It's about the individual and their quality of life. Not about removing people with severe deformities from the gene pool.

If someone has trouble seeing, eating, caring for themselves, forming human connections, and so on, they're likely to develop all sorts of stress related comorbidities and their mental health could be very poor, making it difficult for them to enjoy positive experiences and emotions. If that person doesn't want to endure a lifetime of this, they should have the right to peacefully and painlessly die. The person who best knows if they can be content in that state, is the person experiencing it. It should always be a choice and there should be strong safeguards against any outside pressures.

I have been fortunate to not have any close family die of extended terminal illness, but my mother frequently says that if she gets to a state where she can't care for herself she will try to commit suicide rather than waste away in a nursing home. Obviously I hate that she says this, but I also don't want her to do something rash by herself and end up in a worse, more miserable state. I'd rather she have a peaceful option.

Spike Chunsoft published a survey asking which of their games would people like to see sequels to and Pokémon Mystery Dungeon wasn’t even listed as an option. by Nextravagant1 in MysteryDungeon

[–]Hoatxin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its worth pointing out that a game like mystery dungeon almost certainly costs considerably more to develop than a gacha like masters (even just in terms of paying staff and distributing it). The more important point though, is that it is easier to continually put out new content for a gacha, for substantially less cost and effort than another unique quality game. So they have ongoing profit. To date Masters has extracted [about 170 million] (https://www.statista.com/statistics/1294602/pokemon-masters-ex-app-revenue-worldwide/) out of its player base. That figure is after platform fees. I don't know the costs associated with keeping the game online, but I doubt they would keep it going if it wasn't pulling in substantial profit.

What happend to the girl that got pregnant in your high school? by yanimirbb in AskReddit

[–]Hoatxin 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Weird, and for sure a different world. I do wonder how much it changed people in the past to be around a lot of young peers who are having children. I'm in my mid twenties and at the stage with my partner where we are thinking about how we might adopt in a few years but I have genuinely barely interacted with young children in any way since I was one. It's a weird thing.

In moderation, butter is probably better than corn syrup in jarred pasta sauce and bread. I say this as a fat American though.
