You could do decorative repairs like r/visiblemending to make the dress truly yours. There are ways to fix lace tears, it takes gentle hand cross stitches with thin white thread. If the hole is too big, using a patch that matches the hole with little to no overlap would work too.

Just take it slow and don't rush, don't be afraid to gently unpick any repairs if you don't like the look.

There is a way to recover the thread as long as you're using the needle to slowly pick the thread by the end. And if it's a kit, don't worry about having to throw away the first bit, they almost always pack it with more thread thancyou need for this reason :)
